UPDATE 5-Ransomware attack on data firm ION could take days to fix -sources

ION Group, the financial data firm's parent company, said in a statement on its website that the attack began on Tuesday. "The incident is contained to a specific environment, all the affected servers are disconnected, and remediation of services is ongoing," ION Group said, declining requests for further comment. ABN told clients on Wednesday that due to "technical disruption" from ION, some applications were unavailable and were expected to remain so for a "number of days". Intesa Sanpaolo told clients that its brokerage and clearing operations on exchange-traded derivatives had been "severely hampered" by IT problems at ION and that it was not able to handle orders. Lockbit said it would publish stolen data on Feb. 4 if ION Group failed to pay a ransom, a screenshot of the group's blog on the dark web on darkfeed.io, a website which tracks ransomware groups, showed.

Al-Attiyah on course for Dakar win as spectator death overshadows rally

Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah's strategy of playing it safe saw him move a step closer to retaining his Dakar Rally title but Tuesday's ninth stage was overshadowed by the death of an Italian tourist. The 358km drive through wadis, canyons and dunes saw Toyata driver Al-Attiyah, 52, finish 11min 8sec adrift of the stage winner, nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb. Al-Attiyah holds a lead of 1hr 21min over another Toyota driver, Brazil's Lucas Moraes, with Loeb a further 19min in arrears. Overall leader Skyler Howes of the United States was third, 2min 57sec off the pace set by the stage winner. However, there were two big losers on Tuesday -- Frenchman Adrien van Beveren and fourth stage winner Joan Barreda of Spain.

The latest sanctions follow a Nov. 18 ICBM test by North Korea, part of a record-breaking spate of more than 60 missile launches this year, and amid concerns that it may be about to resume nuclear bomb testing suspended since 2017. The sanctions freeze any U.S.-based assets of the individuals and bar dealings with them, but appear largely symbolic. "Targeting senior officials inside North Korea responsible for WMD and missile activities and working with South Korea and Japan are important, but it is an inadequate and symbolic response to 60+ missile tests, including 8 ICBM tests," said Anthony Ruggiero, who headed North Korea sanctions efforts under former President Donald Trump. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said earlier Washington was committed to using pressure and diplomacy to entice North Korea into giving up its nuclear arsenal.
