SHORTLY before 9am peace broke out in a clash marked by lost tempers, certificate 18 language, and heartfelt pleas for forgiveness. The peace and goodwill happened on Sky News’ Ridge on Sunday, where Steve Baker, the Northern Ireland Minister, was the first guest. Last week, it had been Channel 4 News host Krishnan Guru-Murthy interviewing Mr Baker. After a tetchy exchange, Guru-Murthy was overheard calling the Minister a four letter word. The news anchor apologised but it was not enough to save him from a week’s suspension by Channel 4.

Lothian man 'given headache tablets' for brain tumour

A MIDLOTHIAN man eventually diagnosed with a huge, terminal brain tumour was prescribed headache tablets and told “the mind can do funny things” when he first went to his GP with symptoms. For almost a year during the pandemic Scott McBride, from Loanhead, experienced headaches and physical episodes - later found to have been seizures. Mr McBride was then found to have a 10cm (four -inch) glioblastoma (GBM) brain tumour. “I really wasn’t expecting to hear that.”The 28-year-old, who works in tackling financial crime, is now undertaking a 10km walk to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research. “The operation went really well, and they managed to remove over 90 per cent of the tumour," said Mr McBride.

The first real test for Sunak: Rees-Mogg and the Brexit bill

There is an early test of whether either sense or moderation have entered Downing Street along with its latest occupant. The end of 2023 was set as the “sunset” date for most EU regulations. The more time runs out on them, the more desperate the likes of Rees-Mogg are to complete this version of a “Brexit dividend”. That still leaves us with the same alarms that are sounding throughout the UK in response to the real dangers this bill entails. On his first day in office, the test for Mr Sunak is whether he will defer to the legitimate concerns this bill has provoked – or if he will leave Rees-Mogg to pursue an ideological agenda, in the discredited name of Brexit.

Soft unionists may still prefer the devil they know

We can presume that 40-or-so per cent of people will vote No at any future referendum, come what may, and the same proportion will vote Yes, come what may. In this still-theoretical referendum next October, are the contents of this paper enough for people like me to vote Yes? I voted Remain in 2016, but were I to vote Yes in 2023 it would not be in the belief that this will come to fruition; it doesn’t have a cat’s chance in hell. But Mr Salmond’s view that "soft Unionists" need to feel secure remains a valid one. But an independent Scotland’s central economic ideology is, in reality, the key determinant of the success or otherwise of an independent Scotland.
