Why are critics such as Thorpe so opposed to the voice when the majority of Indigenous Australians are believed to support it? “We are the voice,” activist Lizzie Jarrett told the Sydney rally, urging the crowd to vote against “that fucking stupid voice from Albanese”. (It’s worth reiterating that the Uluru Statement from the Heart calls for a voice as a first step in a sequenced reform that is followed by treaty-making: Voice, Treaty, Truth.) There is no clear-cut answer here, of course: there is no one Indigenous “voice” to listen to, nor will there ever be, even if a voice to parliament is established in this year’s referendum.
