As I said at the Special Session this morning, I know this has been a difficult time for Member States and the staff of the Regional Office. As you know, Member States are now negotiating a new, legally binding international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. I urge Member States of this region to engage actively in these negotiations. So far, no Member States from this region are participating in the pilot phase, and I encourage you to do so. We urge other Member States in the Region that struggle with trachoma to follow Vanuatu’s example in adopting the SAFE strategy.

Representatives of half a dozen Ukrainian organizations visited Belgian mental health service facilities as part of a knowledge exchange programme to learn about the structure, governance and policies that enabled Belgium’s mental health reform and to gather experiences that will benefit the process of mental health service transformation in Ukraine. “We are honoured to support Ukraine in this vital knowledge and experience transformation that will have a profound effect on mental health care provision in the country,” said Dr Jarno Habicht, WHO Representative in Ukraine. Outreach services provided by the community mental health teams consult with service users and gradually replace inpatient services and office-based mental health care. Mental health care policy-makers will continue with the targeted training programme to start the process of transforming mental health service provision in Ukraine. The cooperation with Belgian partners was launched as part of the pan-European Mental Health Coalition by WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge in 2021.1 month ago World Health Organization (WHO)
The COVID-19 pandemic has stressed the importance of working together and leveraging each other’s resources and work in public health. “The WHO Tobacco Cessation Consortium is open for business. We are working with private sector companies and other partners to support people to quit tobacco and improve their health. Helping people quit tobacco use is vital to ending the tobacco epidemic. Latest numbers show that 60% of tobacco users worldwide have expressed a desire to quit, but only 30% have access to comprehensive tobacco cessation services.1 month ago World Health Organization (WHO)
Climate change is already affecting people’s health and will continue to do so at an accelerating rate unless urgent action is taken. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress. The floods in Pakistan are a result of climate change and have devasted vast swathes of the country. Climate policy must now put health at the centre and promote climate change mitigation policies that bring health benefits simultaneously. The COP27 Health Pavilion will convene the global health community and its partners to ensure health and equity are placed at the centre of the climate negotiations.27 days ago World Health Organization (WHO)
WHO today published a report highlighting the first-ever list of fungal "priority pathogens" – a catalogue of the 19 fungi that represent the greatest threat to public health. The WHO fungal priority pathogens list (FPPL) is the first global effort to systematically prioritize fungal pathogens, considering the unmet research and development (R&D) needs and the perceived public health importance. Most fungal pathogens lack rapid and sensitive diagnostics and those that exist are not widely available or affordable globally. The invasive forms of these fungal infections often affect severely ill patients and those with significant underlying immune system related conditions. The Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator today launches its plan for the next six months, setting out how, as a partnership of global health agencies working alongside government, civil society and other partners, it will support countries as the world transitions to long-term COVID-19 control. The transition plan supports the work of ACT-A agencies as they evolve the financing, implementation and mainstreaming of their COVID-19 efforts. The ACT-A hub will continue to provide a transparent view of ACT-A agencies’ financing situation during this period. The ACT-Accelerator is the world’s only end-to-end solution for accelerating the development of, and equitable access to, COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments. We still need to improve access to vaccines, treatments and tests globally, which means fully funding the ACT-Accelerator.1 month ago World Health Organization (WHO)
