John Gregory Perkins was born in Solihull in the West Midlands on November 30 1945. Despite having no broadcast experience, he was part of the launch team for Liverpool’s first independent radio station, Radio City. Radio City, led by the veteran journalist Terry Smith, was different from many of the fledgling stations who saw their primary role as playing the best pop music. Bank of England chief economist accuses Government of ‘disrespecting’ institutions

The Bank of England’s chief economist has warned the Government it must “respect” the nation’s independent economic bodies in a veiled swipe at Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng. Policymakers, including Mr Pill, are expected to raise interest rates by 0.75 percentage points as they battle to bring inflation down from more than 10pc towards its 2pc target. Jim Reid, analyst at Deutsche Bank, warned that history suggests that inflation will take years to get under control. The consultancy said the mini-Budgets’ “legacy will be higher inflation, higher mortgage rates, tighter fiscal policy and a weaker economy”. Its analysts expect the Bank of England’s base rate will rise to 5pc, hammering indebted homeowners.

Russians banned from new mixed-gender tennis tournament

Tennis Australia will launch a groundbreaking mixed-gender team tournament this December, but Russian and Belarusian athletes will be excluded. The United Cup was finally confirmed on Thursday night after months of rumours and reports. The tournament will include 18 teams, with the first 12 countries qualifying via the six highest-ranked men and women who enter. And I think that that's something that's really special about our sport and should be celebrated. The United Cup draw will be held on Thursday November 10.
