Wales Air Ambulance Caernarfon and Welshpool bases secured for at least three more years

Two Wales Air Ambulance bases that were set to close are set to remain open for at least three years. The charity had previously announced proposals to close two bases but today announced a new partnership that will keep its Caernarfon and Welshpool bases operational until at least 2026. Huge congratulations to everyone across northwest and mid Wales involved in the campaign, who worked so hard to persuade the Air Ambulance charity to maintain operations at Caernarfon and Welshpool. The Wales Air Ambulance service has proven itself to be crucial to communities in northwest and mid Wales and the level of public engagement as concerns surfaced about its future, reflected how valued this service really is. Plaid Cymru Powys County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan added: "Excellent news that the Welshpool Air Ambulance base is secure until at least 2026.

Family's 'immeasurable loss' over death of talented and proud former Anglesey Aluminium engineer

A family suffered an "immeasurable loss" when a talented engineer and "proud" father was found dead after years of struggling with mental health problem. She said: "His mental health struggles had been present since 2009 when he left Anglesey Aluminium due to ill health. "He was open to the health board mental health services but his case had since been closed. In his funeral notice, Mr Jones' death was described as being an "immeasurable loss".

Outrage over 'visibly rusty hangers and corroded joints' on Menai bridge

Concerns over the sudden closure of the Menai Suspension Bridge were raised in the Welsh parliament this week as anger intensified among affected motorists. Pedestrians are still allowed to use the bridge and photos shared on social media this week appear to show rusting suspension hangers and corroded bridge movement joints. They have fuelled suspicions of shortcomings in the bridge’s inspection programme. Welsh woman celebrating birthday in London killed after drink driver crashed into rickshaw

A drink driver has been jailed after crashing into a rickshaw and killing a Welsh woman who was in London to celebrate her birthday. Ms Strickland had just got back into the rickshaw before the collision while Ms Redford returned to find her friend lying among the wreckage. She was 31 years old and in the prime of life - "a life you denied her," she said. "She came to London to celebrate her birthday with friends and due to your reckless and selfish actions she never went home." Ms Strickland was thrown from the vehicle and left in the wreckage.

Welsh murderer beat neighbour unconscious before setting fire to his caravan

An arsonist who murdered a neighbour after beating him unconscious and setting fire to his caravan has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The fire was discovered by the site owner's son Jason Pritchard who saw smoke coming from Mr Thomas' caravan and put the fire out with a hose. Mr Thomas was doused in water as firefighters attempted to save his life and applied cooling gel packs. He claimed Mr Thomas had started the fire after pouring the petrol and starting the fire with a lighter. The court also heard Smith had started two fires near Mr Thomas' caravan days before, but these had burnt out.

The medieval castle in Snowdonia that was once the family home of Wales' last native prince

Following Edward's conquest of Wales, he built castles in Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech within just a few years of each other. National Grid will pay you to sit in darkness today - here's how to sign up

Householders could be rewarded for reducing how much power they use today (January 23) as the National Grid activates its Demand Flexibility Service (DFS). Those who are signed up to the service can save money if they reduce how much power they use during certain times. National Grid ESO said it had given the instructions in light of forecasts showing electricity supply margins may be tighter than normal on Monday. National Grid ESO added that its announcement should not be interpreted as a sign that electricity supplies are at risk and said “people should not be worried”. “These are precautionary measures to maintain the buffer of spare capacity we need,” National Grid said in a tweet.
