The first doctor of medicine degree awarded to an American woman is received by Dr Elizabeth Blackwell on this day, 1849. 1939: The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) is registered in Jamaica. 2009: French President Nicolas Sarkozy orders a frigate deployed immediately to the waters off Gaza in an effort to fight arms smuggling and consolidate a fragile ceasefire.

Perry calls for regional approach to fix broken Windies

Three killed in shooting at St Louis high school

(Photo: AP)ST LOUIS, United States (AP) — A gunman broke into a St Louis high school Monday morning, fatally shooting a woman and a teenage girl and injuring six others before police killed him in an exchange of gunfire. St Louis Schools Superintendent Kelvin Adams said seven security guards were in the school at the time, each at an entry point of the locked building. The shooting left St Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones shaken. Central Visual and Performing Arts High School is a magnet school, specialising in visual arts, musical art, and performing arts, with about 400 students.

Boxing officials gain certification at GC Foster

Jamaica Boxing Board officials and a cohort of boxing officials who graduated from a training course at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in St Catherine on Tuesday. The Jamaica Boxing Association (JBA) and the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport hosted their first boxing officials graduation under the recently announced partnership to train officials for the sport, and announced a fight card under the Gloves Over Guns initiative. JBA's Kevin Stupart, an AIBA trained and certified instructor, conducted the training course. "It will open our mind, expand our thinking as we try and get into high school boxing where we could have officials at multiple venues so now that we have 13 officials graduating today [Tuesday] its huge. The fight night, which will see some of the trainees entering the ring to conduct official duties, will be held at GC Foster tonight at 7 pm.

Ukraine blames Russia for making grain export 'impossible'

(AP Photo/David Goldman, File)KYIV, Ukraine (AFP)— Russia's blockade of grain exports makes it "impossible" for fully loaded ships to leave port, Ukraine charged Sunday after Moscow claimed drone attacks on its Crimea fleet had exploited the grain corridor safe zone. Kyiv's maritime grain exports were halted after Russia pulled out of a landmark agreement that allowed the vital shipments. But due to the blockage of the 'grain corridor' by Russia the export is impossible," the Ukrainian minister said. Moscow's military said ships targeted at their Crimean base were involved in the grain deal. - 'Massive' attack -Russia had recently criticised the deal, saying its own grain exports have suffered due to Western sanctions.
