Tennis star Kyrgios to contest Australian assault charge

CANBERRA, Australia—Tennis star Nick Kyrgios was due to appear in an Australian court Friday to apply to have an assault charge stemming from events two years ago dismissed on mental health grounds. Kukulies-Smith told the court his client’s mental health history since 2015 made the application appropriate, citing a number of public statements made by Kyrgios. Theakston questioned whether Kyrgios would need to appear in court for Friday’s hearing, but Kukulies-Smith said his client wanted to attend. Kyrgios had a career setback last month when he withdrew from the Australian Open because of an injured left knee that required arthroscopic surgery. Djokovic went on to win the Australian Open singles championship for the 10th time.

World economy walks tightrope between recession and soft landing

The world economy is beginning the new year on a more optimistic note, though that’s no guarantee 2023 will end that way. “There’s a narrow path to a soft landing,” Goldman Sachs Group Inc. chief economist Jan Hatzius told a Jan. 11 webinar sponsored by the Atlantic Council. Emerging-market equities are on a tear and corporate-bond prices are rising on hopes that the world economy will emerge from the scariest inflation in decades without suffering a downturn. The China reopening, though, could complicate the global inflation story, by stoking demand—and prices—for oil and other commodities. While the risk of a near-term global recession has diminished, there’s still a 70 percent chance of a slump later this year or in 2024, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. chief economist Bruce Kasman.

CEMEX Philippines signed a tripartite agreement with Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX) and Greencycle to further strengthen its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a circular economy.
