US, allies slam Russia for wasting UN Security Council time

The United States and allies slammed Russia on Thursday (27 October) for wasting the time of the UN Security Council and spreading conspiracies by again raising its accusation that the United States has “military biological programs” in Ukraine. Russia has previously raised at least twice at the Security Council the issue of biological weapons programs in Ukraine. The United States and Ukraine have said they do not have biological weapons programs. Such a move is possible – but has never been invoked – under the Biological Weapons Convention, which took effect in 1975. A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, France or Britain to pass.

Putin insists no plan to absorb Belarus on visit in Ukraine shadow

Russian President Vladimir Putin denied plans to absorb Belarus as he paid a rare visit Monday (19 December) to the country whose strongman assisted his invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. Putin called the countries “closest allies and strategic partners” but said that rumours that Russia sought to take over Belarus came from “ill-wishers”. “We have seen the Lukashenko regime essentially cede its sovereignty — cede its independence — to Russia,” Price said. Ukraine’s situation at the front is getting tougher, Zelenskyy says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday (4 February) that the situation on the front lines in the east of the country was getting tougher and Russia was throwing more and more troops into battle. “I’ve often had to say the situation at the front is tough, and is getting tougher, and it’s that time again. … The invader is putting more and more of his forces into breaking down our defences,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address. Lyman, which lies just to the north of Bakhmut, was liberated by Ukrainian forces in October. On Friday, Zelenskyy vowed that his forces will fight for Bakhmut “for as long as we can,” but the situation there is becoming increasingly dire for Ukrainian forces.
