Boris Johnson pulled out of the contest to lead the UK’s ruling Conservative Party, leaving Rishi Sunak on the brink of becoming the next prime minister. While he remains popular with Tory members, MPs are divided about his legacy and worried that returning him to office would revive all the scandals that bought him down. If there’s more than one candidate running by the end of Monday, Tory Party members will have the final say in an online vote, with a result due on Friday. While Sunak has a commanding lead, there are some scenarios where Mordaunt could emerge as the favorite of Tory members. In July, a ConservativeHome website survey of party members ranked Mordaunt second behind Defense Secretary Ben Wallace on who should be leader.

Banished from public consciousness for decades, the nightmare of nuclear warfare has surged back to prominence with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the erosion of the Cold War global security architecture. Russia, along with Britain, China, France and the United States, are the five recognised nuclear weapons powers and permanent UN Security Council members. “It’s the first time a nuclear power has used its status to wage a conventional war under the shadow cast by nuclear weapons,” said Camille Grand, a former NATO deputy secretary-general. Washington, Seoul and Tokyo all believe a seventh nuclear weapons test by Pyongyang is imminent. The invasion of a state that willingly gave up nuclear weapons, Ukraine, by its nuclear-armed neighbour has increased fears of proliferation.

In the 75th year of Indian Independence, Rishi Sunak became the first Asian-origin person to take over as Britain’s prime minister. The enormity of the challenges was reflected in his unsmiling face during his first speech as prime minister Tuesday. Whether Sunak can control his party which has moved far to the right in the wake of Brexit remains to be seen. But there’s a special significance in seeing a non-white British prime minister. Sunak is now the third prime minister in two months and the fifth in six years.

The transaction is expected to take place at a 4 per cent discount to the stock’s Monday closing price of ₹588.65, media reports said. RRVL intends to complete the sale of the Sale Shares within a period of eight trading days beginning December 21, JustDial said. RRVL currently holds a 66.40 per cent stake in Just Dial while promoter and promoter group entities together hold a 76.98 per cent stake in the company. Promoter Khurshed Yazdi Daruvala will be selling up to 20.28 lakh shares (1.07 per cent stake) and Shapoorji Pallonji and Company 47.33 lakh shares (2.50 per cent). They also have an option to additionally sell up to 9.71 lakh shares (0.51 per cent) and 22.66 lakh shares (1.19 per cent) respectively in case of oversubscription of OFS issue.

Why Bangla has chosen to buy rice from Indian cooperatives

Bangladesh seems to have more faith in the Indian cooperatives besides opting for the conventional safety-first measure in importing two lakh tonnes (lt) of parboiled rice from India. Had it given more time or opted for an older crop, it could have got it at a lower price,” said official sources. The Wajed government has been scouting in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia for parboiled rice supplies but its efforts have been in vain. Thailand is offering parboiled rice at $487 and Pakistan is quoting $453-57 a tonne free-on-board. Private traders in India are offering parboiled rice at $380 a tonne.
