Allen presented his last show on 17 February and regular listeners have been asking where he has been over the past week. A Global spokesperson said on Friday: “Steve Allen’s contract with LBC is up shortly and, following discussions with him, Steve is stepping down from LBC today. Adspend forecast: 2022 and 2023 predictions downgraded amid recession fears

Adspend growth in 2022 and 2023 will not be as fast as previously predicted, according to the latest Advertising Association and WARC expenditure forecast. Online regional newsbrands are forecast to bring in 7.2% more advertising income in 2022 than in 2021; for regional newsbrands overall, that figure stands at 2.6%. Growth expectations grew for national newsbrands (up 2.3 percentage points to 3.4%); regional newsbrands (up 2.6 percentage points to 2.6%); magazine brands (up two percentage points to 0.7%). In contrast to predictions for 2022, the AA/WARC report anticipates that adspend will decrease for most news media in 2023. National newsbrands are forecast to see a 2.5% decrease in adspend, magazines a 5.9% decrease and regional newsbrands a 7.1% decrease.

RAJAR figures: GB News only news radio station to see double-digit audience growth in Q3

GB News Radio experienced sharp quarter-on-quarter growth in the third quarter of 2022, according to new RAJAR data. Meanwhile rival right-leaning station Talkradio, which like GB News Radio carries the audio from its sister TalkTV, shed 7.1% of its average weekly audience, falling from 686,000 to 637,000. Audiences at both Times Radio and Talkradio were sticking with the Murdoch stations for longer than GB News Radio, however. Talkradio listeners tuned in for an average 6.9 hours a week and Times Radio listeners 5.9 hours. Radio 2, with the largest RAJAR audience of the stations on the list, suffered a half-percent drop over the quarter to 14.5m average weekly listeners.

BBC chief Tim Davie says undermining local news in search ‘would not be acceptable’

Amid accusations the BBC has leached page views from local news providers, Davie emphasised the corporation’s investment in the local democracy reporting scheme but argued “you can’t change the macroeconomics” affecting local markets. Despite the cuts across the BBC, Davie told MPs: “We are continuing to keep the investment in local. Its chief executive Owen Meredith said: “Tim Davie’s admission that the BBC plans to make its online local news service ‘competitive’ lays bare the corporation’s ambition to compete directly with independent local news providers.

Overall, the top 20 news apps were downloaded a combined 4.4 million times in 2022, while the top ten were downloaded 3.1 million times. This was less than 2021, when the top ten news apps excluding sports news apps were downloaded 4.1 million times. Most popular news apps in the USNews aggregators dominated the US list in 2022, taking all of the top five spots. Several other right-leaning news apps also featured among the US’ 20 most-downloaded apps in 2022.

New York Times promises revenue boost from Google deal as it hits 11m subscriptions

The publisher said in an announcement on Monday that the companies will “work together on tools for content distribution and subscriptions, using Google tools for marketing, ad product experimentation, and further on Subscribe with Google and Google Ad Manager”. It is also unknown whether The New York Times has, like News Corp, signed up as a partner of Google News Showcase.
