Energy bills are due to rise by extortionate amounts in April. Labour has recently landed upon the slogan “sticking plaster politics” to characterise the short-termist, crisis management response of the Tories. But temporary price caps, moratoriums on prepayment meter and windfall taxes all smack of short-termism too. The problem with windfall taxes is that they are preceded by windfall profiteering.
