Spotify has announced today (January 23) that it is in the process of slashing over 500 jobs worldwide. In the same filing, Spotify confirmed that Dawn Ostroff, Chief Content & Advertising Business Officer, is to leave the company. He added: “To offer some perspective on why we are making this decision, in 2022, the growth of Spotify’s OPEX outpaced our revenue growth by 2X. The past six months have seen the technology sector and parts of the music business hit with a series of layoffs. To do this, I will be centralizing the majority of our engineering and product work under Gustav as Chief Product Officer and the business areas under Alex as Chief Business Officer.
As MBW reported yesterday, the total number of on-demand audio streams in the US last year grew handsomely – up 12.1% to 1.1 trillion. The fact that the Top 10 biggest audio streaming hits in the US last year generated fewer cumulative streams than the equivalent year – alongside the fact that the total number of audio streaming plays grew in the market – can only mean one thing: The combined market share of the US’s biggest ten hits fell again. According to MBW’s calculations, the US’s Top 10 audio streaming hits, combined, were cumulatively responsible for less than 0.5% of all on-demand audio plays in the US annually. Back in 2017, just five years prior, more than one in every 100 audio streams (1.23%) was of a Top 10 track. That performance was slightly lower than the annual stream count of 2021’s biggest audio streaming hit (Dua Lipa, Levitating – 627m ).22 days ago Music Business Worldwide

But, generally, as a UK music business, we’re not having the cut-through and the cultural impact. With every artist, with every record, I’m trying to have the biggest hit in the world. If I’m in Round 11 of a boxing match and I’ve lost the last 10 rounds, I’m not going to just cover up, I’m going to try and land a haymaker, because that can turn everything around. This article originally appeared in the latest (Q4 2022) issue of MBW’s premium quarterly publication, Music Business UK, which is out now.22 days ago Music Business Worldwide
