Slim Borgudd 1946 – 2023Tommy Karl-Edvard “Slim” Borgudd was both a Swedish rock drummer and for two seasons a Formula 1 driver with the name of ABBA emblazoned down the side of his cars. For the last decade or so he had based himself in Coventry from where he ran his own sports car team, Slim Racing, and had a reputation as a good race engineer, coach and test driver. The session went well and Memphis Slim told him he was Little Slim. In 1978 he contested the European Formula 3 Championship and finished 11th. For 1979 he had a newer Ralt RT3 and he won the Swedish Championship as well as finishing third in the hotly contested European Championship.

With a dramatic recovery to victory in Austin from a wheelgun failure at his pit stop, Max Verstappen sealed Red Bull its fifth constructors’ championship and its first since 2013. This and the safety car’s wiping-out of the 5sec gap Verstappen had built, put Hamilton in a flattering position. With an advantage of over 4sec Red Bull was able to leave Verstappen out until a lap after Hamilton made his first pit stop and still emerge comfortably ahead. He had an even bigger gap than that as the safety car came out but that of course was demolished as everyone queued up. The first safety car was to collect Valtteri Bottas’s Alfa Romeo from the gravel.

Rotary engine returns as range extender in Mazda MX-30 EV

Mazda on Friday used the 2023 Brussels auto show to present a modern vehicle fitted with a rotary engine. The engine never drives the wheels, meaning it is free to operate at its rev range that's optimal for power and emissions. Mazda MX-30 R-EVSales of the MX-30 R-EV in Europe are confirmed to start in the spring, though availability in the U.S. hasn't been announced. According a report from Green Car Reports, the MX-30 R-EV won't come to the U.S., at least initially, as Mazda concentrates on other vehicles. With its battery fully charged and its 50-liter tank full of gas, Mazda estimates a range of over 400 miles for the MX-30 R-EV.

Verstappen wins USGP, Red Bull takes 2022 F1 teams' title

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen managed to hold off Mercedes-Benz AMG's Lewis Hamilton to secure victory on Sunday at the 2022 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Verstappen was already crowned the 2022 world champion at the previous round in Japan, but his victory at the U.S. Grand Prix, held in Austin, Texas, helped secure Red Bull the 2022 Constructors' title. Verstappen and his team dedicated the victory to Dietrich Mateschitz, Red Bull's co-founder and owner of the Red Bull F1 team, who passed away on Oct. 22 following a drawn-out battle with cancer. The race resumed on lap 26, with Verstappen leading, followed closely by Hamilton and then Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull sits on an unbeatable 656 points, versus the 469 of Ferrari and 416 of Mercedes.
