‘Significant distrust’ could threaten CWI viability, says independent group

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – An independent three-member group commissioned by Cricket West Indies to review the Caribbean side’s failed campaign at last year’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, have pointed to “significant distrust” between the players and the sport’s regional governing body. Unless the situation was remedied, the report continued, CWI faced the distinct possibility of dissolution. Otherwise, West Indies Cricket may cease to exist as an entity. Despite the discord, West Indies managed to win two T20 World Cups – in 2012 and 2016 – and also reaching the semi-finals of the 2014 tournament. “Cricket West Indies (CWI) must develop and create clear pathways for the identification, development and management of talent.

Saka’s second goal allowed England to take their foot off the gas and opened the door for Iran to grab one back through Mehdi Taremi, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish rounded off England’s scoring. The game eventually took centre stage and it was not long before England were in top gear. Shaw was the provider again for England’s second as his corner was headed back across the area by Harry Maguire to Saka, who volleyed home expertly. England were not done, however, as Saka grabbed his second in the 62nd minute. His side face Wales on Friday when England take on the United States.

Exxon posts highest profit in its history

Exxon posted the highest profit in its 152-year history, while Chevron announced its second-best quarterly result as natural gas demand and prices surged. “We recognize the pain that high prices cause,” Exxon Chief Executive Officer Darren Woods said during a conference call with analysts. Expectations among analysts rose after Exxon’s Oct. 4 trading statement said that robust natural gas prices more than offset a dip in crude markets. Chevron is reaping a massive free cash flow bounty amid the surge in oil & gas prices and strict capital discipline. The shares touched a record high this week and have soared more than 70% this year as high oil and gas prices combined with more modest capital spending.

The second tier, representing the sovereignty of God, consists of just one man: the Supreme Leader, or Faqih. It is a wholly made-up office, concocted by the man who first claimed the position for himself: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Thus, for most of the last 1,400 years, Shia clergy have refused to interfere in governmental affairs, instead adopting a position of political quietism. Even though the Faqih was supposed to be Iran’s most learned religious authority, Khamenei was little more than a mid-level cleric – not even an ayatollah – with thin credentials.

The question that is troubling me lately is this: Who holds the individuals of our governing sporting bodies to account? For national athletes, our personal journeys become part of the nation’s story; a part of the national narrative. For the majority of those 30 years, I have been fearful of speaking out about some of the ways in which those bodies responsible for national sport have failed us all as national athletes. Shouldn’t national athletes expect something more? In spite of all this, national athletes continue to feel the power and pride of the Guyana uniform.

New Zealand stun champions Australia in Super 12 opener

SYDNEY, (Reuters) – Devon Conway scored a brilliant unbeaten 92 as New Zealand thrashed champions Australia by 89 runs in a rematch of last year’s final, opening the Super 12 stage with a bang at the Twenty20 World Cup yesterday. We know how good this Aussie side is but the boys showed a lot of ticker and took their catches. Dropped by Adam Zampa on 19, the 23-year-old opener pummelled five fours and three sixes before he was clean-bowled by a Josh Hazlewood yorker. Warner’s unfortunate early departure for five — Southee’s opening delivery came off his pad and bat and went back into his stumps — kept Australia on the back foot. “They got the jump on us in the first four overs and we never really recovered from that,” said Finch.
