Their legacy has contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights for over 70 years. Díaz nets 2 as Milan beat Berlusconi-owned Monza 4-1

Associated PressA first-half brace from Brahim Díaz helped AC Milan to a 4-1 win over Monza in Serie A, making it an unhappy return to San Siro for former Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani on Saturday. Divock Origi scored his first goal for Milan and substitute Rafael Leão sealed the game after Filippo Ranocchia had pulled one back for Monza. The only negative note for Milan was the sight of Díaz limping off early in the second half clutching his left thigh. Milan moved level with Serie A leader Napoli ahead of the southern club’s match against Roma on Sunday. Berlusconi bought Monza in 2018 and installed Galliani as CEO — reuniting the duo that found success at Milan until Berlusconi sold the Rossoneri in 2017.

Prioritising sustainable agriculture

Sustainable agriculture aids in economic development and provides the basis for livelihood for most people, including here in Malta. COP signatory parties have agreed to continue to work on sustainable agriculture by recognising the importance of using sustainable soil and management practices (e.g. crop rotation), sustainable production, and designing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems to safeguard food security. These could include investing in precision agriculture practices, digital-enabled products, biotechnology, fleet management and digital sensors, amongst others. To this end, COP27 will further feature the prioritisation of sustainable agriculture practices that ultimately ensure resilience of the sector and food security.

Ronaldo scores on return, Man United beat Sheriff 3-0 in EL

Associated PressCristiano Ronaldo scored on his return to the Manchester United lineup to seal a 3-0 victory over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday that secured a spot in the knockout round. The Portugal star started against Sheriff and netted the last goal nine minutes from time on a rebound after Sheriff goalkeeper Maxym Koval saved his initial header. Substitute forward Marcus Rashford headed home the second in the second half following a cross from another substitute, Luke Shaw. Arsenal still leads Group A with 12 points, with Eindhoven second on 10 with one round remaining. But the Spanish club was already assured of qualifying in first place from Group C and avoiding the extra playoff round.

ECB unveils another jumbo rate hike to tackle inflation

The European Central Bank on Thursday rolled out another bumper rate hike to combat soaring inflation, despite growing concern that the eurozone is hurtling towards a painful recession. Eurozone inflation stood at 9.9% in September, nearly five times the ECB's 2% target. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni this week slammed the ECB's "rash choice" to aggressively hike rates, saying it created "further difficulties for member states that have elevated public debt". ECB president Christine Lagarde will likely be quizzed about the political grumbling at her 1245 GMT press conference in Frankfurt. As an unintended consequence of the ECB's rate hikes, lenders are currently able to make an easy profit by parking their excess TLTRO cash at the ECB and pocketing the new, higher deposit rate.

Labour’s half-baked abortion proposal

It is about time that we recognise that the country’s abortion legislation is not fit for purpose. After being ignored for 160 years Maltese abortion legislation requires to be brought in line with medical and scientific progress over the years. We do not require a half-baked reactive proposal but rather a proposal which addresses twenty-first century reality. During this week a group of local academics and some hangers-on have published a discussion paper which discusses government’s abortion proposal. The discussion paper is a negation of this journey and an attempt to change course, which attempt should be resisted.

It remains to be seen if he plays again for PSG before the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20. Many World Cup squad announcements take place this week, before a final round of domestic league games from Friday to Sunday. National team coaches will have their fingers crossed that no injuries crop up over the weekend, with clubs obliged to release their players for World Cup duty from Monday. It will take much more than that to stop Bale from playing at his first World Cup, and Wales' first since 1958.
