Leicester City ended a run of four league losses in a row following the World Cup break with a point against high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion. City looked to be on track for their first league win of the year, before the Scotsman headed past Danny Ward. City had found themselves behind in the first half when Karou Mitoma curled home a shot in the 27th minute. National media were in attendance for the game, here is how they reported on the goings on during the 90 minutes. After a long VAR delay preventing the home fans celebrating their first league goal here since October, relief eventually came.

Campaigners call for quarry to be turned into country park but businesses have other plans

A Leicestershire quarry is nearing the end of its life and campaigners are calling for it to be turned into a country park. However, the businesses operating the land at Shawell Quarry, in Harborough district, are hoping to keep using it even after extraction from the site comes to an end. And for them to go one step further and designate the space a country park to protect it from future development. There are also conditions included in several planning applications associated with Shawell Quarry site stipulating the land should be restored at the end of its life. “Harborough District Council is now reviewing those submissions as part of its plans for future growth.

Council to buy Leicester student flats for £5.5m to help ease housing crisis

Leicester City Council is to buy the Zip Building, in Rydal Street, between Eastern Boulevard and Jarrom Street, near De Montfort University. The Zip Building will increase this supply by 58 homes, including much-needed one- and two-bed accommodation. This will be paid for through £2.4 million brought in through the Right to Buy scheme, £3.1 million of borrowing and £600,000 of 'allowable debt'. There is no doubt that the Right to Buy scheme has hit the supply of council housing hard. We’re losing homes much faster that they are being built, and it’s time the Right to Buy scheme was abandoned.

Family's shock as 'impossible' OVO Energy bill rockets from £74 to more than £1,300

A family were left shocked and confused when they were asked to increase their energy bill payment to more than £1,300 per month - up from their previous instalments of £74. The family-of-four were informed by supplier OVO Energy earlier this year that they had an outstanding balance of more than £16,000. After more than a month of distress from the huge new bill the family, who did not want to be identified, contacted LeicestershireLive. After being contacted, OVO Energy has since apologised for the issue, related to discrepancies between an historical meter reading and readings from a new smart meter. OVO finally reached out to the family after LeicestershireLive contacted the company.

People on Universal Credit and DWP benefits to get up to £200 in vouchers this winter

Thousands of people on Universal Credit are due to receive up to £200 in food and energy bills vouchers this winter as part of the government's Household Support Fund. A statement on the Leicester City Council website reads: "Leicester has been allocated £3.4m for the winter and new guidance has been issued. The Household Support Fund is designed to support people most need in need amid the cost of living crisis. Under the Household Support Fund, the vouchers or cash payments will help provide support linked with essentials - including energy bills, food and water. According to the Leicestershire County Council website, families that have received Free School Meal (FSM) vouchers may also require support with fuel or other utility costs.
