Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who made the energy drink a global phenomenon and forged a title-winning Formula One team and a sports empire, died on Saturday aged 78, the company said. Red Bull expressed both its "sadness" at the Austrian billionaire's death and "gratitude for what he accomplished". Red Bull have also branched out into extreme sports, sponsoring events such as air acrobatics and cliff diving. He decided to partner with the beverage's developer Thai businessman Chaleo Yoovidhya and the two men founded Red Bull in 1984. Red Bull won their first drivers' and constructors' titles with German driver Sebastian Vettel at the wheel in 2010.

Tension eases as blast 'likely caused' by Ukrainian missile

NATO ambassadors had been holding emergency talks to respond to the blast that killed two people at a grain facility in Poland near the Ukrainian border - the war's first deadly spillover to the territory of the Western military alliance. Polish Prime Minister Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Warsaw might not need to activate Article 4 of NATO's treaty, which calls for consultations when a member country sees its security under threat. In the immediate wake of the hit in Poland Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy blamed it on "Russian missile terror," but there was no immediate response from him on it being a stray from his own side. The missile fell on Przewodow, a village about six kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Zelenskiy calls on West to warn Russia not to blow up dam

(Reuters)Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the West to warn Russia not to blow up a dam that would flood a large area of southern Ukraine, as his forces prepared to push Moscow's troops from the occupied city of Kherson. In a television address, Zelenskiy said Russian forces had planted explosives inside the huge Nova Kakhovka dam, which holds back an enormous reservoir, and were planning to blow it up. Russia has accused Kyiv of rocketing the dam and planning to destroy it in what Ukrainian officials called a sign that Moscow might blow it up and blame Kyiv. Bursting the dam could send a wall of water flooding settlements below it, towards Kherson, which Ukrainian forces hope to recapture in a major advance. As Russian forces have faced setbacks on the battlefield since September, Putin has intensified the war.

EU seeks united front on China reliance as Germany plans trip

President Xi rejects westernization as modernization

China must work to create a path to modernization that is more efficient than capitalism, Xi told top officials this week according to the state-run Xinhua news agency report. The core of achieving these goal lies with sticking to the leadership of the Communist Party, Xi said, adding that this will decide the “ultimate success or failure” of China’s efforts to develop. In his report to the Party congress in October, Xi explained that Chinese-style modernization encompasses five aspects including common prosperity, harmonious co-existence of people and nature, and peaceful development. “Chinese-style modernization breaks the myth of ‘modernization equals Westernization,’” Xi said in the speech on Tuesday, explaining the idea which he has spoken about with increasing frequency in recent years, including 11 mentions in his speech to the congress. China’s economic growth stabilized at the end of last year and picked up at the beginning of this year, according to Li.
