Gaizka Iroz/ AFPSAINT-JEAN-DE-LUZ, France — A teacher at a school in southwest France was killed on Wednesday in a stabbing attack by a teenage pupil in the middle of a lesson, the regional prosecutor said. The teacher of Spanish, 52, was teaching a class at the school in the seaside town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz when the pupil, 16, attacked her with a knife. The BFM television channel said that the attacker had locked the classroom door and stabbed the teacher in the chest. In July 2014, a 34-year-old teacher was stabbed to death in the southern town of Albi by the mother of a pupil.

State of emergency in Italy’s Ischia after deadly landslide

A first tranche of €2 million ($2 million) of relief funds was released at the end of an emergency cabinet meeting which declared the state of emergency, said Minister for Civil Protection Nello Musumeci. Local authorities called on residents of Ischia to stay inside to avoid hindering the rescue operation. The devastation in Ischia comes just weeks after 11 people died in heavy rain and flooding in the central Italian region of Marche.

Catapang allows PDLs to use ‘controlled cellphones’ to talk to relatives

Poultry stakeholders called on the government to come up with long-term solutions to ensure that the Philippines will continue to have enough supply of chicken amid the elevated prices of various commodities. In a statement, the stakeholders in the poultry sector said that the industry was hit by high inflation, which clocked in at a 14-year high of 8.7% in January. United Broiler Raisers Association (UBRA) chairman Gregorio San Diego said feed prices are at an all-time high, prompting the cost of production to increase as well. According to poultry stakeholders, the reduction of corn tariffs managed to help the industry and provided a base to keep prices a bit tempered amid a high-inflation environment. The government must constantly communicate and collaborate with all stakeholders to find solutions so we can thrive even in uncertain conditions,” Jimeno added.

Garcia: No longer viable to hold barangay, SK polls in December 2022

Commission on Elections Chairman George Garcia on Friday told the Supreme Court that the poll body could no longer hold the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) in December 2022. He disclosed that the Comelec Law Department was already instructed to inquire and make a recommendation to the En Banc regarding the pending awarding of contracts and the notice to proceed. "December 5, 2022 elections could push through because it was not the fault of the Comelec that these delays were caused. Macalintal added the terms of incumbent barangay and SK officials will end by December 31, 2022. Hence, the Comelec can still hold the elections by December 26 or close to the termination of their term of office.—AOL, GMA News

PCC OKs AIA’s acquisition of MediCard

The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) has approved the planned acquisition by AIA Philippines Life and General Insurance Company Inc. (of 100% of shares in MediCard Philippines Inc. Citing its decision released Friday, January 6, 2023, the PCC said it found that the proposed takeover will not likely result in substantial lessening of competition in the markets for individual and group health or medical coverage. Currently, 29 health maintenance organizations and 30 life insurance companies compete in providing individual and group health or medical coverage, it said. The PCC added it observed that customers looking for group health or medical coverage have high bargaining power and can negotiate with service providers for better terms. In the Philippines, AIA Philippines was formerly known as Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company or AIA Philam Life, is a life insurance company.

China’s Xi arrives in Saudi Arabia for energy-focused visit

SPA/ AFPRIYADH — Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for a visit that is likely to focus on energy ties but also follows months of tensions with the United States. Xi, recently re-anointed as leader of the world's second biggest economy, arrived in the capital Riyadh, Chinese and Saudi state media said, for a three-day visit that will include talks with the Saudi rulers and other Arab leaders. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Riyadh Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar were among those who welcomed Xi at the airport, where a ceremonial purple carpet was laid out from the steps of the plane. Xi's visit is expected to be closely watched in Washington, which entered into what is often described as an oil-for-security partnership with Saudi Arabia towards the end of World War II. China and Saudi Arabia already work together on arms sales and production.
