Second-half goals from Premier League duo Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez ensured Argentina progressed after Lionel Messi had a controversial penalty saved by Wojciech Szczensy. Messi will now lead Argentina out versus Australia in the next round, while Poland’s reward for squeaking through is a tough test against reigning champions France. But there was nothing the former Arsenal player could do just two minutes into the second half as Mac Allister’s first Argentina goal put his side ahead. Alexis Mac Allister put Argentina ahead (Adam Davy/PA)The scuffed strike was the first goal Szczesny has conceded in the tournament and needed to give Poland a wake-up call which never came. At that stage of the contest, Poland were progressing by virtue of picking up three fewer bookings than Mexico.

Mexico had last suffered group-stage elimination in 1978, having reached the knockout phase in each of their previous seven World Cups. There was huge support for Saudi Arabia inside the Lusail Stadium, venue for the World Cup final on December 18. Mohamed Kanno had two attempts for Saudi Arabia, slashing wide and sending a free-kick just over, but it was Mexico who poured forward at every opportunity. It looked as if Mexico had to score, but in the end it was Saudi Arabia who had the final word.
