But she called on participants to use the two-day gathering as "your opportunity to stand up for Ukraine and to confront the lies from the aggressors." Fresh Strikes Target Energy Infrastructure Across Ukraine

Energy facilities throughout Ukraine were targeted by a new wave of Russian strikes on October 22, while Kyiv's air defense shot down several missiles above the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office said 88 settlements in the southern Kherson region and 551 settlements in the northeastern Kharkiv region have been “de-occupied,” while the Ukrainian forces' counteroffensive in the Kherson region moves ahead. Zelenskiy added in his nightly video address on October 21 that the Ukrainian forces had shown “good results” in capturing Russian arms in Kherson. Ukraine is trying to drive Russian forces in Kherson back east across the Dnieper. Zelenskiy said Russian forces had planted explosives inside the dam, which holds back an enormous reservoir, and were planning to blow it up.

"According to the information we have, two organizations in Ukraine have specific instructions to create a so-called dirty bomb. Moscow's claims that Ukraine could employ a dirty bomb raised concern that Russia could use such a device and blame Kyiv. The official, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, also said the Ukrainians are not building a dirty bomb. "It would certainly be another example of [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin's brutality, if he were to use a so called 'dirty bomb.' There would be consequences for Russia whether it uses a 'dirty bomb' or a nuclear bomb.

Iranian Currency Slides To New Low Amid Unrest, Isolation

Five Iranian security officers pounced on a young protester after he fell to the ground, beating him severely. Both of the eyewitnesses said Moayidi was shot after joining others to help the protester who was being beaten. Sources with knowledge of the situation told RFE/RL's Radio Farda that there was no doubt Moayidi had joined protests taking place in Shiraz on November 13. That claim prompted the family to file an official complaint with the local branch of the Intelligence Ministry in which they demanded to know who killed Moayidi. Prosecutors in Fars Province, of which Shiraz is the capital, have continued to claim that Moayidi was killed by "rioters."

Meanwhile, deadly Russian bombardment again hit the recently liberated Ukrainian city of Kherson, a regional official said. The Ukrainian military said its air force carried out 22 strikes on Russian positions, while its air-defense systems downed two enemy helicopters. In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian shelling overnight caused destruction in Nikopol, the head of the regional administration, Valentyn Reznychenko, said on Telegram. The two countries will continue holding joint military exercises and will maintain military cooperation in other areas, Putin and Lukashenka said afterward. Putin also ordered the Federal Security Services (FSB) to increase surveillance of Russian civilians to stifle the "emergence of new threats."

The visit would be Zelenskiy’s second to the White House since taking office more than 3 1/2 years ago. A wing of the Republican Party in Congress has come out against large-scale aid to Ukraine.

Ukraine's military has claimed about 500 soldiers were killed or wounded in the attack. If mobilized men were killed in Makiyivka, it could stiffen resistance to serve should the Kremlin seek to again draft citizens. He did not exclude that Russian soldiers could have given away their location by posting photos on social media or using their phones to call home. Ukrainian forces also shot down 27 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russian forces, the General Staff added. The Russian military attacked the outskirts of Zaporizhzhya with rockets late on January 3, said regional Governor Oleksandr Starukh.
