Fighting back tears, Ardern told reporters in Napier that Feb. 7 will be her last day as prime minister. It’s unclear who will take over as prime minister until the election. Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson announced he wouldn’t be contesting for the leadership of the Labour Party, throwing the competition open. In March 2019, Ardern faced one of the darkest days in New Zealand’s history when a white supremacist gunman stormed two mosques in Christchurch and slaughtered 51 people. She was widely praised for the way she embraced the survivors and New Zealand’s Muslim community in the aftermath.

Díaz nets 2 as Milan beats Berlusconi-owned Monza 4-1

MILAN (AP) — A first-half brace from Brahim Díaz helped AC Milan to a 4-1 win over Monza in Serie A, making it an unhappy return to San Siro for former Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani on Saturday. Divock Origi scored his first goal for Milan and substitute Rafael Leão sealed the game after Filippo Ranocchia had pulled one back for Monza. The only negative note for Milan was the sight of Díaz limping off early in the second half clutching his left thigh. Milan moved level with Serie A leader Napoli ahead of the southern club’s match against Roma on Sunday. Benzema resting, Madrid beats Sevilla 3-1 to extend lead

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Karim Benzema proudly showed his Ballon d’Or award to fans at the Santiago Bernabéu and then sat back as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 3-1 and increased its lead of the Spanish league on Saturday. Vinícius Júnior set up two goals for Madrid as the Brazil winger continues to excel both with, and without, Benzema playing by his side. Luka Modric and former Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, both former Ballon d’Or winners, handed Benzema his award in a ceremony before kickoff. Modric then proceeded to ensure that Madrid did not miss Benzema’s goals, scoring from an assist by Vinícius to give Madrid the lead five minutes into the game. Those assists are worth more than scoring goals.

Taiwan extends compulsory military service to 1 year

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan will extend its compulsory military service from four months to a year starting in 2024, President Tsai Ing-wen said Tuesday, as the self-ruled island faces China’s military, diplomatic and trade pressure. The longer military service applies to men born after 2005, and will start Jan. 1, 2024. Of Taiwan’s 188,000-person military, 90% are volunteers and 10% are men doing their required four months of service. A poll from the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation in December found that among Taiwanese adults, 73.2% said they would support a one-year military service. Among the youngest demographic group of 20-24, however, 37.2% said they opposed extending the military service, and only 35.6% said they would support an extension.

Knicks snap 3-game home losing skid, beat Suns 102-83

NEW YORK (AP) — Julius Randle had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a 102-83 win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday in New York. Immanuel Quickley scored 15 points, Quentin Grimes had 12 and Mitchell Robinson finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks. Williamson scored 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting through three quarters before he left for the locker room in the fourth. Irving has 32 points, Nets beat Knicks for 9th straight time

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving scored 21 of his 32 points in the final 9 1/2 minutes, carrying the Brooklyn Nets to their ninth straight victory over the New York Knicks, 122-115 on Saturday. Irving’s sixth straight game of 30 or more points gave him a career high and the Nets an NBA franchise record. He didn’t seem headed that way when he was only 4 for 14 with 11 points early in the fourth quarter. Joe Harris added 16 points and Nic Claxton had 13 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Nets. HALL OF FAME FANSFormer Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who coached Irving, Barrett, Curry and Knicks reserve Cam Reddish, was at the game.

Burns, Panthers look to take down ‘arch nemesis’ Brady, Bucs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Brian Burns, a Pro Bowl defensive end who goes by the nickname “Spiderman,” calls Tom Brady the Carolina Panthers’ “arch nemesis.“And for good reason. Brady is 4-0 against Carolina since joining the NFC South, averaging 279 yards passing per game with eight touchdown passes and one interception while helping the Bucs outscore the Panthers 150-63. But Brady and the Bucs offense doesn’t resemble that of the previous two seasons. This week, he admitted the offense is far from a “finished product.”Burns is hoping the Panthers (1-5) can take advantage. The Bucs are 3-3 despite being plus-three in turnover margin and ranking fifth in the league in scoring defense.

Vassell and Spurs top Timberwolves 115-106

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Devin Vassell scored 23 points and Jakob Poeltl added 14 points and 14 rebounds to help the San Antonio Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 115-106 on Monday night. The Spurs jumped out to a 20-point lead in the second quarter and expanded the lead to 35 points early in the fourth quarter before the Timberwolves rallied. “You got to be happy for (the Spurs players),” San Antonio coach, Gregg Popovich said. While Minnesota was playing the second game of a back-to-back, Towns will unwilling to let that be an excuse. Spurs forward, Jeremy Sochan helped set the tone early, leading his team with 12 first half points.
