Nygren and Navajo Nation Council Delegate Otto Tso, who temporarily is overseeing the tribe’s legislative branch, jointly announced the lifting of the mask mandate on social media Friday evening. Nez credited the mask mandate for the lower coronavirus rates and said he’s praying that COVID-19, RSV, and flu cases don’t rise. Enforcement of the mask mandate had been mixed on the 27,000 square-mile (69,000 square-kilometer) Navajo Nation. He said he suspected a large percentage of patrons haven’t returned because of the mask mandate but might now. “I’m willing to bet a majority of Navajo people are going to keep wearing their masks, mandate or no mandate,” she said.

‘Once in a Generation’ winter storm to impact Christmas travel in Phoenix

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5/CNN) - A major winter storm and cold blast will impact nearly every state and bring what the National Weather Service is calling a “once-in-a-generation type event” that will cripple travel on some of the busiest travel days of the year. More than 90 million people are under winter weather alerts and more than 87 million are under wind chill alerts. The number of people under winter alerts and wind chill alerts has grown to over 100 million people, or roughly a third of the US population, according to the National Weather Service. “Whiteout conditions are expected during that time with travel becoming very difficult or impossible,” said the weather service. The sudden arrival of these conditions can increase the danger,” the weather service explained.

LIVE: Cochise County Board of Supervisors to reconsider ballot hand-count proposal Monday

PHOENIX (AP) — Officials in Cochise County, located in southeastern Arizona, will once again consider a plan to hand count all ballots in November’s election alongside the normal machine count. Arizona’s Secretary of State sent a letter to Cochise County officials warning of a possible lawsuit if the measure goes forward. Cochise County plans to vote to hand count every single race on every single ballot—w/ Election Day just 18 days away & early voting already started. Republican Supervisor Tom Crosby also proposed the hand count, while board Chair Ann English, a Democrat, did not take a public position. County Recorder David Stevens, a Republican, said the proposal came mainly from conservative Republicans who said they had signed up 140 volunteers to hand-count ballots.

NASA to launch historic moon mission Wednesday after Hurricane Ian damaged the mega rocket

NASA has begun fueling the rocket ahead of another launch attempt, which comes after weeks of battling various technical issues and setbacks that included the rocket withstanding a Category 1 hurricane. The rocket sustained only minor damage, according to NASA, including a 10-foot-strip of caulking that came loose on the Orion spacecraft. Though it’s designed to carry humans, Orion’s passengers for this test mission will be of the inanimate variety, including some mannequins collecting vital data to help future crews. The mission team has run into trouble previously with leaky super-chilled liquid hydrogen, a central issue in the first two Artemis launch attempts (and the decision to scrap those attempts). This a test mission, but NASA — and the corporate contractors that helped build the $4.1 billion SLS — have a lot riding on it.
