But U.S. officials have said President Joe Biden’s administration is not poised to send its own tanks, including the M1 Abrams.

Mount Baldy is a 10,000ft peak located northeast of Los Angeles, in the Angeles National Forest. Sands is a keen hiker and mountain-climber who once described his happiest moment as “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”. Sands’ career after A Room with a View has been an eclectic one, comprising horror, indie, romance, and action-comedy.

Shock wave from sun has opened up a crack in Earth’s magnetic field, and it could trigger a geomagnetic storm

A mysterious shock wave in a gust of solar wind has sent a barrage of high-speed material smashing into Earth’s magnetic field, opening up a crack in the magnetosphere. The barrage of plasma could lead to a geomagnetic storm today (Dec. 19), according to spaceweather.com . They can not only warp our planet’s magnetic field powerfully enough to send satellites tumbling to Earth , but can disrupt electrical systems and even cripple the internet . The largest solar storm in recent history was the 1859 Carrington Event, which released roughly the same energy as 10 billion 1-megaton atomic bombs. A previous solar storm in 1989 released a billion-ton plume of gas that caused a blackout across the entire Canadian province of Quebec, NASA reported.

The first few months of the year have a relative dearth of meteor showers, so it’s worth trying to catch the Quadrantids during their very short peak just after New Year’s. While December is packed with opportunities to catch abundant Geminid and Ursid meteors, the Quadrantid meteor shower is the sole major shower in the first quarter of the year, and it peaks quite briefly Tuesday night and Wednesday morning this week. Also, the window of opportunity to see Quadrantids is very narrow, with a peak of intense activity that is just six hours long this year, according to the American Meteor Society. You could get lucky with an outburst of Quadrantids that produces up to 120 meteors per hour, according to some predictions. If the weather cooperates where you are, consider making the effort to get outside and look up early Wednesday, because the next major meteor shower isn’t until April.

Philippines NAIA: Power outage leaves thousands stranded, flights canceled on New Year’s

(CNN) — Chaos erupted on New Year’s Day in the Philippines after a severe power outage temporarily impacted air traffic control at the country’s largest airport, disrupting nearly 300 flights and leaving tens of thousands of travelers stranded in the Southeast Asian hub. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) is the main gateway for travelers to the Philippines, serving the capital Manila and surrounding region. Technical issues were first detected on Sunday morning, the airport operator, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), said in a statement. Although there was a back-up power supply, it had failed to supply enough power, he added. The New Year airport crisis also threw many Filipinos working overseas off their flights bound for destinations like Hong Kong and Singapore.
