Peslikis’s right leg hangs over the armrest while her curling right arm shows off an unshaven armpit. People Come First, the largest Neel retrospective yet staged in New York, monopolised the Tisch Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last summer. It is a wonderful display that demonstrates Neel’s remarkable ability to paint the same sitter in radically different styles, and yet be so palpably recognisable as both themselves and as a Neel portrait. “In politics and in life, I always liked the losers, the underdog,” Neel wrote. • Alice Neel: an Engaged Eye , Centre Pompidou, Paris, until 16 January 20234 months ago The Art Newspaper
Lévy had chartered a jet, but, at the last minute, Soulages chose not to leave Rodez. And if the lights were too strong, reverberation was a problem, especially with the most recent works in acrylic. He had to wait until 2019 for his first retrospective at the Centre Pompidou; the Louvre dedicated a show to his recent works when he was 100. The UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has appointed Lucy Frazer as the new Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). TheFrazer, the Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire and prime minister Rishi Sunak's new culture secretary, will no longer be given responsibility for developing the UK's digital policy. Sunak’s decision to withdraw digital policy from the culture secretary's portfolio of responsibilities means digital policy and media and cultural policy will now have to be co-ordinated across two separate government departments. The Department of Culture, Media and Sport will accordingly return to the name it held between 1997 and 2017, having been renamed as the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in 2017. This has led to criticism from some notable voices, including the former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, who worked as the UK's culture secretary under the former prime minister Boris Johnson between September 2021 and September 2022.1 month ago The Art Newspaper
