FIFA World Cup 2022 Lionel Messi wins record seventh FIFA best men's player award Published Feb. 27, 2023 7:40 p.m. EST share facebook twitter reddit linkWorld Cup champion Lionel Messi edged Kylian Mbappé again, this time to take FIFA’s 2022 best men’s player award on Monday. The best women’s player was Spain’s Alexia Putellas for a second straight year. Messi became the first player, male or female, to win seven FIFA best player awards, breaking a tie with six-time best women's player Marta of Brazil. The 35-year-old Messi also beat out Mbappé — who was seeking his first best player award from FIFA — for the Golden Ball trophy, awarded by FIFA for the World Cup’s best player. Messi broke a record he shared with Ronaldo by making the men’s world best XI for the 16th time.
