SALT LAKE CITY: LeBron James has not missed the NBA playoffs in back-to-back seasons since his first two campaigns and the Los Angeles Lakers star really doesn't want it to happen this year. He was the 2004 NBA Rookie of the Year and reached his first NBA All-Star Game in 2005 but the Cavaliers missed the playoffs both seasons -- the only time so far James missed consecutive NBA playoffs. The Lakers missed the playoffs last season after going 33-49 and need a charge to avoid another flop. James missed three games with a left foot injury before making a comeback last Wednesday.

UN envoy: Myanmar crisis taking 'catastrophic toll'

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations' special envoy for Myanmar warned on Tuesday that the political, human rights and humanitarian crisis in the military-ruled Southeast Asian nation was deepening and taking "a catastrophic toll on the people." She said the meeting "was part of broader efforts by the UN to urgently support a return to civilian rule." She stressed that "there is a new political reality in Myanmar: a people demanding change, no longer willing to accept military rule." Much of the international community, including Myanmar's fellow members in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), have expressed frustration at the hard line the generals have taken in resisting reform. Heyzer also said that although she had been working "extremely closely" with Asean officials, she was critical of its five-point consensus, which didn't deal with the Rohingya or how best to return Myanmar to civilian rule.

Johnson, Sunak discuss Tory leadership

Former prime minister Johnson, who returned from a Caribbean holiday earlier in the day aiming to launch an audacious political comeback just weeks after leaving office, met ex-finance minister Sunak to discuss the race, the BBC and others reported. The Sunday Telegraph reported they were set to discuss "agreeing to a joint ticket" to avoid a Tory "civil war." Tory MP James Duddridge, a key Johnson ally who confirmed Friday the ex-leader was intent on standing, said Saturday that he had now secured the support of 100 colleagues. Johnson has nonetheless been endorsed by several Tory heavyweights, including on Saturday ex-interior minister Priti Patel. Meanwhile, posting a photo of Johnson on the phone to his Facebook, backbench Conservative MP Lee Anderson revealed he was backing him after "a long chat about everything past and present."

Rory rules CJ Cup, regains World No. 1

WASHINGTON: Rory McIlroy held on for a one-stroke victory in the US PGA Tour CJ Cup on Sunday (Monday in Manila) to return to the top of the world rankings for the ninth time in his career. McIlroy defended the CJ Cup title he claimed last year in Las Vegas. He and Kitayama, seeking a first US PGA Tour title, were tied at 16-under after birdies at the par-five 12th. At 16, he rolled in a 22-foot birdie putt to stretch his lead to three strokes. He needed two putts from there, but Kitayama couldn't get his birdie putt to drop and so a bogey was enough to seal McIlroy's win.

HK, Shanghai shares dip on China fears

HONG KONG: Stocks in Hong Kong and Shanghai saw big swings on Tuesday following the previous day's rout after Xi Jinping tightened his grip on power in China, while other markets fought to maintain a rally fueled by hopes of a less hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed). The uncertainty resulted in a drop of more than 6 percent in Hong Kong on Monday, with tech firms — which have been hardest hit by Xi's crackdown on a range of private-sector companies — taking the brunt of the pain. "Investors are getting more confident that inflation will soften as the consumer rethinks massive purchases," Oanda's Edward Moya said. A fifth of S&P 500 companies have so far released their figures, with more than half beating expectations, according to Bloomberg News. However, there are expectations it would continue to drop owing to the divergence between the Bank of Japan's ultra-loose monetary policy and the Fed's tightening.
