CinemaThis image released by Netflix shows Wendell, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, left and Wild, voiced by Jordan Peele in a scene from "Wendell & Wild." (Netflix via AP)Just in time for Halloween comes a film that isn’t afraid to lean into the darkness, one frame at a time. In the first five minutes of “Wendell & Wild,” our teen heroine loses her parents in a car accident, her town is economically gutted and she ends up in the back of a prison bus, her legs shackled and her hands cuffed. Director Henry Selick’s return to stop-motion animation is icy, from the slushy potholes on the roads to the vapor clouds that emerge from characters’ mouths. “Wendell & Wild,” a Netflix release, is rated PG-13 for some thematic material, violence, substance use and brief strong language.5 months ago The National Herald

(AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. applications for unemployment benefits fell to their lowest level in 15 weeks as the job market continues to show resiliency in the face of attempts by the Federal Reserve to cool the economy. The number of Americans applying for jobless aid for the week ending Jan. 7 fell by 1,000 to 205,000, from 206,000 the week before, the Labor Department said Thursday. Even with the solid numbers, December’s jobs report suggested that the labor market may be cooling in a way that could aid the Fed’s fight against high inflation. Though the U.S. labor market remains robust, layoffs have been mounting in the technology sector, which is dealing with falling demand as inflation squeezes both businesses and families. About 1.63 million people were receiving jobless aid the week that ended Dec. 31, a decline of 63,000 from the week before.2 months ago The National Herald
Where is this winter weather coming from, and what’s in store for the coming days? A front of cold air is moving down from the Arctic, sending temperatures plunging. This weather system is expected to bring some major “weather whiplash,” said Judah Cohen, a winter storm expert for Atmospheric Environmental Research. It all started farther north, as frigid air collected over the snow-covered ground in the Arctic, Maue said. But with the huge amount of cold air coming through, we could see a rare bomb cyclone forming over land.3 months ago The National Herald

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner, file)BERLIN — Germany’s government agreed on a compromise Wednesday that will allow a Chinese shipping group to take a smaller stake in the operator of the country’s biggest container terminal following concerns the deal might pose a national security risk. SocietyE-commerce giant Amazon and business software maker Salesforce are the latest U.S. technology companies to announce major job cuts as they prune payrolls that rapidly expanded during the pandemic lockdown. It’s the largest set of layoffs in the Seattle-based company’s history, although just a fraction of its 1.5 million global workforce. Salesforce workers who lose their jobs will receive nearly five months of pay, health insurance, career resources, and other benefits, according to the company. Like other major tech companies, Salesforce’s recent comedown from the heady days of the pandemic have taken a major toll on its stock. Salesforce also said Wednesday that it will be closing some of its offices, but didn’t include locations.2 months ago The National Herald
