Samoa set up a semi-final re-match against England with a dramatic 20-18 win over Tonga at Warrington. Matt Parish’s side held on at the death to deny Tonga, who had set up a grandstand finish through Siona Katoa’s 71st minute try. Tonga never led in the match and they were left heartbroken as the end, as Samoa reached their first ever World Cup semi-final. After forcing a repeat set, Samoa let their opponents off the hook when Oregon Kaufusi dropped the ball cold 10 metres out. Tonga are keen to play England in an end of season test series according to international centre and St Helens star Konrad Hurrell. New Zealand were believed to be keen to play England in a series, but now look set to remain Down Under in 2023 alongside world champions Australia. “Woolfy (Kristian Woolf) has already spoken to the boys and I think they’re all keen for that (to play England),” Hurrell said. Hurrell has joined calls to increase the international calendar following the World Cup in England. Fiji did well (at the World Cup) and PNG did well, too.

Saints draw London Broncos on historic Wembley trail

St Helens will aim to make a double slice of history for Women’s Rugby League in 2023 after being drawn against London Broncos in the group stage of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup. Saints have won the Cup in each of the last two seasons and are aiming to complete a hat-trick at Wembley Stadium on August 12, with the Women’s Final to be played before the Betfred Challenge Cup Final for the first time. Edinburgh Eagles will have home advantage against the renowned Challenge Cup battlers Saddleworth Rangers, while Rhondda Outlaws have a lengthy trip from South Wales to East Yorkshire to face Hull Dockers. There are two all-League One ties as Rochdale Hornets face London Skolars, and Doncaster host Oldham, while Cornwall’s first Challenge Cup tie will be at home to Rochdale Mayfield. Further details of the fixture schedule for the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup, and coverage of the First Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup, will be confirmed as soon as possible.

St Helens lay down marker with truly impressive performance against St George

St Helens showed what they can do ahead of the World Club Challenge as they looked very good against St George Illawarra Dragons. But the Saints still impressed giving Penrith a bit of a warning of what they can expect next week. St Helens started the quicker with plenty of speed catching the Dragons off guard. The Dragons then led as rookie fullback Treigh Stewart jinked and weaved his way through the Saints’ defence and paired with Lomax’s conversion the Dragons led 12-10. St Helens started the second half strong with Jon Bennison and James Roby going close.
