Invest in downtown Alpena expansion

Although I was not surprised by the decision of the Alpena County Board of Commissioners to not support the Alpena Downtown Development Authority expansion proposal, I was disappointed. Downtown Alpena would not be what you see it as today without the Downtown Development Authority. My guess is that Alpena County will not be investing dollars into the proposed expansion area that would result in similar success to what the Downtown Development Authority has proven capable of achieving. Grab a map from the DDA of the current DDA boundaries and of the proposed expansion area. In the current downtown, or in what is currently the proposed expansion area?

Rumors aside, Dems better at the economy

As of September, the inflation rate was 10.9% in the European Union and over 13% in the United Kingdom. There’s this myth that Republicans are good for the economy because they’re better at controlling deficits. Let’s set politics aside for a moment and take a sober look at the current economic picture. No one is saying that the economy is swell or denying that the economic trends hurt some more than others. It’s only to note that contrary to the common impression, Democrats traditionally oversee stronger economies than Republicans do.

Veteran shares war memories after memorable Honor Flight trip

“You never forget that.”Schaedig was among 80 veterans recognized this month by the mid-Michigan hub of the National Honor Flight Network. The passage of time hasn’t dimmed Schaedig’s memories of serving overseas during the Korean War, listening to the voices of the enemy in the dark and watching friends die. DANGER UP CLOSEAt night, with the enemy 300 yards away, he could hear North Korean soldiers talking in the darkness. The Korean War, Vietnam War, and World War II veterans — one 100 years old — on the flight woke at 4 a.m. for their trip, arriving home at 9 p.m. the same day. At the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Schaedig found the engraved name of Russ Schlabaugh, his closest friend in basic training who was killed shortly after they arrived on the front line.

5 seek 4 seats on Atlanta school board

ATLANTA — Five candidates are running in the Nov. 8 election for four spots on the Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education. She has experience in that area, as well, that would help direct the school board. “I think one of the things I would like to go for is grant opportunities.”Pam Parsons has served the school board for two terms. She taught high school grades in L.A. County and she said she wants to be a part of the school board to help out the community and the students. She also said she sat in on a current school board meeting and liked what she saw.

We have to address homelessness here

Take, for instance, the issue of homelessness. For as long as I can remember, homelessness has been a problem impacting Northeast Michigan, and, yet, the problem still exists today, just like it existed 20 years ago. Homelessness is not a problem unique to Northeast Michigan. I can remember, at one point, the United Way of Northeast Michigan board wrestled with the issue. Earlier this month, Alpena News Reporter Julie Riddle wrote yet another insightful story on the homelessness issue.

Posen heads for Marion in playoff opener

POSEN — There’s just something special about a high school football team making the post-season. Twelfth-ranked Posen (7-2 overall) gets to do that for the fourth time in five years tonight (Friday), when it heads to play third ranked Marion (9-0) for a first round 8-Player Division 2 contest. “We’ve been focused this week in preparation, just enjoying each other’s company and just enjoying having another week to play football,” Posen coach Greg Pietsch said. “We are going to go over and give our best effort and play football. “They have all the components that really make a successful football team and they’ve had lots of success, especially in the last two seasons,” Pietsch said.

Local reaction mixed on possible gun control legislation

ALPENA — Northeast Michiganders have mixed opinions on gun control legislation planned in Lansing following a mass shooting Monday on the Michigan State University campus. Gretchen Whitmer called on the state’s lawmakers to pass tighter gun control measures before the shooting at MSU that left three people dead and five critically injured. Northeast Michiganders this week had differing opinions on that news. “Gun legislation is an issue that crosses political boundaries,” said Marie Fielder, who was the Democratic nominee for Northeast Michigan’s state rep last year but spoke to The News in no official capacity. But also for protecting and defending ourselves.”Fielder said she believes members of both parties can come together to find solutions that protect gun ownership and protect Michigan residents.

Rogers City looks for revenge against Newberry in playoff opener

ROGERS CITY — For as good as last year was for Rogers City, there was one glaring setback: A 44-36 week nine loss against Newberry that spoiled the Hurons’ bid for an undefeated regular season. “Last year we played them well enough to come out on top,” Rogers City coach Jesse Fenstermaker said. When the opening round 8-player Division 1 playoff match-ups were announced on Sunday, it set up tonight’s home contest with Newberry. “That definitely means a lot,” Fenstermaker said. Their first playoff win in over 20 years.
