Sirianni and several Eagles stumped for Hurts to win MVP in the wake of the Associated Press award finalists being announced Wednesday. He’s had a great year.”The funny thing is, Hurts’ MVP push may have been aided by results in the games he didn’t play. The Eagles went 0-2 when Hurts sat out two late-season games because of a sprained right shoulder. Hurts, though, is just 24 and playing in his first NFC title game. Sirianni went 3-0 against Daboll and the Giants this season.

Goal Lines: Capital City to celebrate Homecoming, Senior Night vs. Kirksville

For the first time, Capital City will have alumni coming back for Homecoming. After the school graduated its first senior class in the spring, they will have their first homecoming opportunity when the Cavaliers host Kirksville at 7 p.m. today for both Homecoming and Senior Night at Adkins Stadium. “It was really important for those guys to be contributors all season,” Capital City coach Joe Collier said of his key backs’ combined success. Senior Kendrick Hartman (5-10, 170) leads the upperclassmen-heavy Tigers with three interceptions, while Jalen Kent and Lyons both have two. Senior Jackson Farwell (6-0, 165) is second on the team with 41 tries for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

Seven LU alumni inducted into Army ROTC Hall of Fame

The Soldiers Memorial on the Lincoln University campus provided a stunning backdrop for the induction of seven alumni into the college's Army ROTC Hall of Fame on Oct. 14. This year's inductees included: Lt. Col. (retired) Damian Cunningham, Lt. Col. Anthonnie Eason, Lt. Col. (retired) Joseph Gentry (deceased), Col. Jared Harty, Lt. Col. Donald Loethen, Col. Pat Nelson and Kelvin Watson. "They have earned it, and it's been a long time coming," Alexander said of this year's Hall of Fame inductees. He continued, "One of this year's inductees, Col. Pat Nelson, could not be here today because of his service with the U.S. Army. HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Bubba Wallace is missing today’s NASCAR race, and that’s evidently not his only sanction after losing his cool in Las Vegas last weekend. Custer and his crew chief, Mike Shiplett, were both fined $100,000 after NASCAR determined Custer’s slowdown was deliberate. And last week, Wallace intentionally wrecked reigning Cup champion Kyle Larson at Las Vegas in a dangerous act of retaliation. So, I believe NASCAR kind of decided it’s getting out of hand.”Drivers tended to agree with NASCAR on these calls. He’ll be in the team garage, and Logano said he doesn’t think Wallace owes his fellow drivers an explanation.

Pelé was sitting by the pool, and the New York Cosmos general manager began the cold call that changed U.S. sports history. His 2½ seasons in New York put U.S. soccer on a path to hosting the World Cup in 1994 and launching Major League Soccer two years later. When Pelé had led Brazil to his third and final World Cup title in 1970, the primary way to watch the tournament with English-language commentary in the U.S. was on closed-circuit television in arenas like Madison Square Garden. Toye and North American Soccer League commissioner Phil Woosnam had the league purchase U.S. rights that year for $15,000 but couldn’t find a TV network that would agree to broadcast. “The Cosmos was the spark that lit the fire that has become a conflagration of soccer in our country,” said Alan Rothenberg, a former U.S. Soccer Federation president and the head organizer of the 1994 World Cup.

PASADENA, Calif. — KeAndre Lambert-Smith had the longest touchdown reception in Rose Bowl history Monday on an 88-yard pass from Sean Clifford, freshman Nicholas Singleton broke a tiebreaking 87-yard touchdown run, and No. 9 Penn State rallied past No. Utah couldn’t rally with quarterback Cameron Rising sidelined by a second-half injury, and coach James Franklin’s exuberant group comfortably won the Rose Bowl for the second time in school history and the first since Jan. 2, 1995. The 87-yard romp was the third-longest TD run in Rose Bowl history and the second-longest in Penn State’s bowl history. Shortly after rain began to fall on the Rose Bowl Game for the first time since 1997, Lambert-Smith got open deep and eluded Utah’s defensive backs on the first snap of the fourth quarter for the longest pass completion in Penn State’s bowl history.
