Google axes 12,000 jobs as global tech sector layoffs continue

Just this month, there have been at least 48,000 job cuts announced by major companies in the sector. Alastair Grant/AP Google is laying off 12,000 workers, or about 6% of its workforce, becoming the latest tech company to trim staff. There will be job cuts in the US and in other unspecified countries, according to Pichai’s letter. Those job cuts are hitting smaller players as well. Yet the tech sector grew exceptionally fast over the last several years due to increased demand as employees began to work remotely.

Boris Johnson reportedly 'up for it' as comeback momentum grows

Former Conservative leader Michael Howard implored the party not to return to the “psychodrama” of the Johnson era. In order to be considered, candidates will need the signatures of at least 100 of the 357 Conservative lawmakers, meaning a maximum field of three. More than half of Conservative lawmakers have not publicly backed a candidate yet.

Red Bull Formula 1 owner Dietrich Mateschitz dies at 78

Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, the co-founder of energy drink company Red Bull and founder and owner of the Red Bull Formula One racing team, has died. Officials with the Red Bull racing team at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, announced Mateschitz's death on Saturday (Sunday NZT). Gero Breloer/AP Mateschitz hugs Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel after the driver became Formula 1 world champion in 2010. With the growing success of Red Bull, he significantly expanded his investments in sports, specifically motorsports and extreme sports, and Red Bull now operates football clubs, ice hockey teams and F1 racing teams. The Austrian Servus TV station, owned by Red Bull Media House GmbH, is known for promoting right-wing provocative views.

Flight test: Flying London to Auckland with Etihad a reliable choice if you're willing to stop in Australia

Route: London to Auckland via Abu Dhabi and Melbourne with Etihad, (Melbourne to Auckland on the same booking as a Star Alliance codeshare with Air New Zealand). Seats: Leg 1 - 8D in business class, courtesy a surprise upgrade from coach. There are 32 flat-bed business class seats in Etihad's 787-9 Dreamliner. The only slightly odd thing was the promo video that came up for Etihad’s forthcoming replacement Business class seats, which seemed a bit of tease! On boarding our captain announced the slight delay was due to a late change in aircraft, and perhaps for this reason we had the older business class seats.

Leicester Fainga'anuku leaves All Blacks squad for family reasons ahead of Japan test

All Blacks coach Ian Foster expects the end of year fixtures up north to serve up some fresh challenges for his side. Crusaders back Leicester Fainga'anuku has left the All Blacks squad for family reasons and is out of the test against Japan in Tokyo on Saturday night. The selectors are weighing up a replacement, All Blacks defence coach Scott McLeod confirmed, with Fainga'anuku due to arrive back in New Zealand on Monday night. McLeod also said the three Barrett brothers have yet to rejoin the squad in Japan. “We've got an outstanding group that's here and all very keen,” McLeod said from Japan on Monday.

Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk urges Fifa to remove Iran from men's World Cup

Ukraine’s top football club has urged Fifa to remove Iran from the World Cup because of the country's alleged military support to the Russian invasion. However, if an Asian team was suspended there would be no precedent for Fifa to replace it with a European team at the World Cup. Fifa has suspended Russian teams following its invasion of Ukraine, which barred Russia from playing in the World Cup qualifying playoffs in March. Fifa normally only suspends national teams when the country's government is judged to have interfered in the independent running of the national soccer federation. Five Asian confederation teams advanced to the World Cup to join host Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates was the next best in qualifying.

Junior doctor denied Medical Council registration in NZ calls for change

Junior doctor Mourin Das says she may return to Australia to work as a doctor after failing to gain her registration from the Medical Council of New Zealand. But the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) says she doesn’t meet the necessary criteria needed to work in her chosen field. “I’ve had a number of medical job offers in New Zealand, but when I tried to register with the Medical Council it said my experience wasn’t comparable,” she said. She said the comparable health system pathway for registration, which Das applied under, doesn’t require the sitting and passing of an examination to gain registration. Supplied Junior doctor Mourin Das says with the current crisis in emergency departments like Middlemore Hospital’s, the Medical Council needs to make it easier for overseas doctors to get their registration.
