German language film All Quiet on the Western Front was the big winner at the British Film and Television Awards, scooping seven honours. The Netflix anti-war epic, directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger and based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, scooped top gongs including Best Film and Best Director. Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis also won four awards, with its star Austin Butler beating favourite Colin Farrell for Best Actor in a shock decision from the voting academy. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy won the Bafta for best British short animation. The Bafta for Best Documentary went to Navalny, while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won the Bafta for Best Animated Film.

Dubai leads Mena region in global engagement levels survey

Dubai continued to lead the Middle East and North Africa region in terms of global engagement, a study by management consultancy Kearney has found. The emirate climbed one place to 22nd position out of 156 cities on this year’s Global Cities Index. The index measures the global engagement of 156 cities across five categories — business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience and political engagement. The Middle East as a region overtook China in the cultural experience dimension of the index. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi was ranked ninth globally on Kearney’s Global Cities Outlook, which assesses how the 156 cities are creating conditions for their future status as global centres.

Delhi's air quality drops to 'very poor' category after frenzied fireworks on Diwali

The Air Quality Index in the city — the world’s most polluted capital — was hovering at the “very poor” category with PM 2.5 breaching the 300-mark on average on Tuesday morning, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. On an average, five million tonnes of firecrackers are burnt during the Diwali festival in Delhi, according to a 2018 report by environmental charity Urban Emissions. Air quality fell to 'very poor levels' with tens of thousands of people setting off massive firecrackers to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali on Monday night. However, the city’s air quality was still the best for Diwali in four years, according to the CPCB. Delhi’s satellite city Noida registered an air quality index of 324, meaning that the air quality posed a danger to human health.
