Fresh Tube and ambulance strikes to hit London

S trike action was announced on the Tube and by ambulance workers on Wednesday in a fresh wave of industrial action. While ambulance and other health workers from the Unison union will strike on 8 March in an escalation of their long-running dispute over pay. Tube drivers will strike for 24 hours after 99 per cent voted in favour of strike action. A year ago, Sam Curran had watched on as his teammates began their T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, sidelined by what would soon become a hallmark of authenticity among English seam bowlers: a stress fracture of the back. Sam Curran is congratulated by his captain England captain Jos Buttler. Stokes finished with figures of 2-19 from four overs, not bad for a player whose last four balls at a T20 World Cup had each been clobbered for six. Tory leadership race latest LIVE: Half of Tory MPs back Rishi Sunak as he leads race for No10

R ishi Sunak has reportedly gained the support of more than half of all Tory MPs to become Britain’s next prime minister as at least 12 “switchers” from Boris Johnson’s campaign backed him on Monday morning. They included Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, Cabinet Office minister Nadhim Zahawi, former Home Secretary Priti Patel, former Culture Secretary Sir John Whittingdale and another close ally of Mr Johnson, Sir James Duddridge. After Mr Johnson pulled out of the contest on Sunday night, ex-Chancellor Mr Sunak was picking up new backers far quicker than Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt who is also seeking to get the support of 100 MPs needed to get on the ballot paper to go to party members to decide from a shortlist of two. One tally put Mr Sunak on 180 (more than half the 357 Tory MPs), with Ms Mordaunt on 31, but other reports have lower figures. If only the former Chancellor gets the support of 100 MPs, he will become Tory leader on Monday afternoon, and Britain’s first non-white PM, without a vote by party members.

Sunak and Murthy reportedly lived in India for four years as newlyweds before moving to the UK shortly before Sunak became MP for Richmond in Yorkshire in 2015. Indeed, family were at the heart of his initial premiership campaign: unlike Truss’ family, Murthy and their daughters accompanied him on stage at campaign events and seemed happy to pose for photo calls walking hand in hand along the street. It’s unlikely the Truss family have had time to change much during such a short tenure – so what will happen to that flat at Number 11 now?

R apper and fashion designer Kanye West has made several antisemitic remarks over the past month - and several brands have severed ties with him as a result. Last weekend, a small group of antisemitic protesters in Los Angeles was spotted holding signs that said “Kanye West was right about the Jews”. BalenciagaLuxury fashion house Balenciaga was the first major company to cut ties with West amid the controversy. PelotonExercise instructor Alex Toussaint told Peloton members on Monday that his classes would no longer include Ye’s music. The platform followed suit on Tuesday, telling members that it “indefinitely paused” the use of Ye’s music in workouts.

R ishi Sunak has faced off against Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions in his first Commons outing as leader, after the Government confirmed that the much-awaited fiscal statement will be delayed. The Labour leader welcomed Mr Sunak, saying it was a “significant moment in our national story” that he was the first Prime Minister of South Asian descent. Mr Hunt said it was “prudent” to delay the statement, which is now an “upgraded” full Autumn statement, to allow for the most up-to-date economic forecasts. He said the plans would show debt falling in the medium term. The new-look Cabinet met for the first at 9.30am, with minister Nadhim Zahawi telling journalists as he left that the party was “very united”.

Bringing back Braverman reveals that Sunak cannot be serious about grown-up government or growth, because if you want some you need more immigration.
