LEWISTOWN — Democratic candidates for two state offices took part in the Mifflin County Farm Bureau’s annual Measure the Candidates Night at Mifflin County High School Wednesday. “We teach children what to do when there is a shooter in the school,” Taylor said. Both agreed it was important to have an office in Mifflin County, if elected. Zeigler said he would have offices in Bellefonte and Mifflin County. Budget, taxes top board discussion

LEWISTOWN–The main topic of discussion at the Mifflin County School Board Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday was the 2023-24 budget timeline and the possibility of a tax increase. Chief Financial Officer Melinda Kenepp addressed the board on the Pennsylvania Department of Education timeline for a preliminary budget and the decision to raise taxes or opt-out of the raise. The board also took the following action:• Recommend approval of minutes of the Committee of the Whole meeting held Sept. 15, 2022. • Recommend approval of the regular board meeting minutes held on Sept. 22, 2022. • Recommend approval of the Inter-district Agreement for Non-Public Title I Services – 2022-2023: Juniata County School District for Sacred Heart students.

Assessment shows failure of lockdowns

Nationwide only 33% of fourth graders and 31% of eighth graders read at or above grade proficiency. Fourth graders’ average math scores have now fallen below basic levels in Milwaukee, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Cleveland. Baltimore and Cleveland fourth graders recorded a 15-point drop since 2019. Yet in all three districts the average fourth grader remained above basic mastery of math fundamentals in 2022.

The top 25 individual finishers were awarded medals in both the boys and girls races. They are both in their first season of running and have the tools to go far in this sport,” Juniata coach Jeff Miller said. “This is an amazing group of young men,” boys coach Greg Loht said. “Each of these girls have experienced the value of hard work, discipline, and training which has transformed them over the season,” girls coach Neil Breneman said. State seeks sanctions over county voting machine access
