China reported one new Covid death in the mainland for Wednesday, compared with five a day earlier, bringing its official death toll to 5,259. DATA GAPSWith one of the lowest official Covid death tolls in the world, China has been routinely accused of under-reporting for political reasons. In December, the WHO said it had received no data from China on new Covid hospitalisations since Beijing's policy U-turn. Methods for counting Covid deaths have varied across countries since the pandemic erupted in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. British-based health data firm Airfinity has estimated about 9,000 people in China are probably dying each day from COVID.

WASHINGTON: The United States and Japan on Wednesday announced stepped-up security cooperation in the face of shared worries about China, and Washington strongly endorsed a major military buildup Tokyo announced last month. LONDON: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reshuffled his cabinet on Tuesday, breaking up two departments to better suit his pledges to spur the economy, reduce energy prices and turn around his party's fortunes before an election expected next year. "The government needs to reflect the priorities of the British people and be designed to deliver for them," Sunak said on Twitter. "These changes will focus teams on the issues that will build a better future for our children and grandchildren." In the changes, trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch was given an expanded role including business and trade. Greg Hands, a former trade minister and one-time party enforcer for the Conservatives, was appointed party chair.

LONDON: Boris Johnson and former finance minister Rishi Sunak were leading the potential contenders to replace British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday, with candidates canvassing support to become Conservative Party leader in a fast-tracked contest. In what would be an extraordinary comeback, Johnson, who was ousted by lawmakers just over three months ago, was running high up the ranks alongside Sunak to be crowned the next prime minister. "Boris Johnson is the character the Labour Party fears, Boris Johnson can win the next general election," he said. But Will Walden, who also worked for Johnson, told Sky News the former prime minister was returning from holiday and was taking soundings. Running in third is Penny Mordaunt, a former defence minister popular with Conservative Party members.
