A blizzard warning was issued for the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, effective from 4 a.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service said. More than 18 inches (46 centimeters) may pile up in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the National Weather Service said Wednesday evening. Wind chills may fall to minus 50 F (minus 46 C), said Nathan Rick, a meteorologist in Grand Forks. As the northern U.S. deals with a winter blast, National Weather Service Meteorologist Richard Bann said some mid-Atlantic and Southeastern cities set new high temperature marks by several degrees. The high in Lexington, Kentucky, reached 76 F (24 C), shattering the Feb. 22 mark of 70 F (21 C) set 101 years ago.

LAS VEGAS — Jack Eichel scored twice, Adin Hill made 26 saves and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Thursday night. Eichel had his third multi-goal game in 39 contests since joining Vegas last season. William Karlsson had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights. “Our energy right from the get-go was 100%,” said Hill, who was spotted a four-goal lead in the first period. I thought they were well rested and ready to go.”Dubois spoiled the shutout bid early in the second period, when he fired home a rebound off Hill’s chest through his pads.

Jets lose Breece Hall and Alijah Vera-Tucker for the season

The Jets won their fourth game in a row on Sunday but suffered two big losses in the process. Coach Robert Saleh announced on Monday that running back Breece Hall and offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker – arguably the team’s two best performers on offense so far in 2022 – are out for the season. Hall tore his right anterior cruciate ligament in the second quarter of Sunday’s 16-9 victory over the Broncos in Denver, and Vera-Tucker suffered a triceps injury that will require surgery. Saleh referred to Hall and Vera-Tucker as “two potential Pro Bowlers” but adopted a stoic demeanor, expressing faith in their primary replacements, Michael Carter and Ty Johnson for Hall and Cedric Ogbuehi for Vera-Tucker. “I always say this: Somebody go up to Michael Carter and say that he can't do it,” Saleh said.

Jaroslav Halak's rough start continues in Rangers' loss to Islanders

With the Rangers playing the second of a back-to-back, and with Isles goalie Ilya Sorokin making some unbelievable saves at the other end of the ice, Halak played well for the Rangers, but not well enough to win. It was Halak’s third loss in three starts and the Rangers’ fourth straight defeat (0-2-2). The Rangers signed Halak as a free agent this summer after trading away Alexandar Georgiev to the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. The Rangers needed someone who could deal with the irregular playing time that would be a natural offshoot of Shesterkin’s starting the lion’s share of the games. Against the Islanders, for whom he played four seasons, from 2014-18, Halak has not had good numbers.

The Rev. Calvin Butts, influential Harlem pastor and former SUNY Old Westbury president, dies at 73

In 1999, Pataki appointed Butts as president of the SUNY Old Westbury, a move that provoked skepticism as the pastor worked full time in Harlem and had never held a job in academia. At the time, SUNY Old Westbury had struggled with declining enrollment and had been marked for possible closure. Timothy Sams, who succeeded Butts as president of SUNY Old Westbury, said his predecessor carved out the university's niche as the system's most diverse institution. "Students at SUNY Old Westbury’s campus knew they were welcome and that he was their champion," SUNY leadership officials said in a statement. DiNapoli recalled that Butts became part of the Long Island community, speaking frequently at Long Island churches large and small.

Nets' Ben Simmons makes on-court return to Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – Ben Simmons has had nothing but good things to say about Philadelphia and its fans ahead of his playing return to the Wells Fargo Center in a Nets uniform on Tuesday night. Last March 10, Simmons sat on the bench in street clothes as the Nets blew out the 76ers in his first return to Philadelphia. On Tuesday, Simmons started alongside Nic Claxton, who missed Sunday’s game for what the club called personal reasons. Simmons opened the game by assisting on the first three baskets — two for Claxton, one for Kyrie Irving — as the Nets took a 6-0 lead. Simmons said he has spoken to some of his former teammates leading into this game, but Embiid was not one of them.

Damar Hamlin's situation reminds us of how risky playing football can be

The night everyone in football had been anticipating for weeks turned into the night everyone in football has been dreading for decades. Both teams soon retreated to their locker rooms while the complicated and unprecedented logistics of putting the brakes on an NFL game went into motion. In a conference call with the media late Monday night, NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent — a former player himself — said there never were discussions about that five-minute ramp-up. This wasn’t a football injury. But even if it wasn’t five minutes, it’ll be five days before the next NFL game kicks off on Saturday.
