Shanghai district locked down amid COVID-19 surges in dozens of Chinese cities

Shanghai disease prevention worker Tao Li said nobody from Xinjiang, Tibet or Inner Mongolia is currently allowed to enter the city. "Shanghai is concealing high numbers of positive tests in new arrivals, with about 20 cases a day," Tao said. Inner Mongolia reported 263 confirmed cases and 1,919 asymptomatic infections on Oct. 26. "A lot of communities in Hankou have been locked down, including in [my district] Qiaokou, Jianghan and Hanyang," Fang told RFA. "It's pretty exaggerated given that there were 24 cases reported."

Charter amendments turn Chinese Communist Party into a 'gang' led by Xi, analysts say

A former professor at the Communist Party school hits out at the concentration of power in one person's hands. Amendments to the Chinese Communist Party charter have transformed the ruling party from an organization for political cooperation to a "gang" led by general secretary Xi Jinping, analysts told RFA. Former Communist Party school professor Cai Xia said the amendments effectively turn the party into Xi's personal "gang," as its members are obliged to uphold his leadership. "The Communist Party has become a gang organization with him as its gang boss," said Cai, who now lives in the United States. "This means absolute power for Xi Jinping ... because of that binding power on party members and officials,” Chen said.

After setbacks on the ground, Myanmar junta holds power by ruling the skies

Analysts say the military’s jets and attack helicopters are helping it keep rebel forces at bay. Junta forces have faced a number of setbacks since ousting the democratically elected government in a coup 20 months ago. A few of the wounded later died as residents said roadblocks set up by military forces hampered aid efforts. Kadidal at Janes said the Myanmar military is “likely” to have acquired Kamov Ka-29 Helix utility-attack helicopters.

Pro-democracy publishing house in Thailand targeted for shutdown by Chinese buyer

Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, founder of Sam Yan Publishing House, complained to Thailand's Matichon TV station that he was repeatedly threatened by CCP agents with bids of 2 million baht and the shutdown of the business. Screenshots of the initial email to Sam Yan showed that it included the possibility of the publishing house restarting six months later under a new name. Sam Yan was founded by a group of college students in 2017, and was a participant in the regional Milk Tea Alliance of pro-democracy movements and anti-Beijing protests. A recent tweet from Sam Yan Publishing House. Wu said that given the fact that Southeast Asian countries are typically economically dependent on Beijing, the attempt to take down a progressive Thai publishing house was "worrying."

Aung San Suu Kyi receives a further 7-year sentence

Former president Win Myint received the same sentence, according to the sources who declined to be named for security reasons. Suu Kyi and Win Myint testified throughout the trial that they were not guilty of bribery. Junta spokesman Maj. Gen Zaw Min Tun told RFA in the past that Aung San Suu Kyi had been judged guilty and no one is above the law. Suu Kyi was arrested with Win Myint in Naypyidaw shortly after the military seized power in a Feb. 1, 2021 coup. Political analyst Than Soe Naing said he believes the many years of prison sentences imposed on Aung San Suu Kyi are aimed at removing her from Myanmar’s political stage.

Outside China, concern exceeds optimism as Xi Jinping begins third term as ruler

The issue is not that Xi Jinping really has nailed down the third term. However, it was unlikely that he was going to take moves to start some sort of conflagration that would extend into the party Congress. This is a continuation of a reassessment reached late in the Hu Jintao era, and which Xi Jinping has both embraced and acted upon. With Xi Jinping still as leader because he can't really blame this policy on anyone else. On the other hand, you have Xi Jinping internally talking about a rich nation, strong army.

China loosens COVID restrictions in wake of anti-lockdown protests

China on Wednesday announced a further loosening of its COVID-19 prevention measures, allowing the majority of cases and contacts to quarantine at home in an apparent bid to stave off further anti-lockdown protests and kickstart the economy. The new rules come days after a wave of anti-lockdown protests in Chinese cities at the end of November, sparked by a fatal fire in Xinjiang's regional capital Urumqi in which some victims were prevented from leaving by pandemic prevention measures. ‘White paper revolution’Former Hong Kong Baptist University politics professor Benson Wong said the new rules were a clear response to recent anti-lockdown protests across China. Hong Kong officials were likely having trouble interpreting the latest directive out of Beijing, he said. "Neither the chief executive [John Lee] nor his officials have come out to say anything about this yet," Wong said.
