Plastic recycling remains a ‘myth’, says Greenpeace

After peaking in 2014 at 10%, the trend has been decreasing, especially since China stopped accepting the West’s plastic waste in 2018. According to Greenpeace USA’s survey, only two types of plastic are widely accepted at the nation’s 375 material recovery facilities. These are numbered “1” and “2” according to a standardized system in which there are seven plastic types. Fourth, recycled plastic carries toxicity risks through contamination with other plastic types in collection bins, preventing it from becoming food-grade material again. “New plastic directly competes with recycled plastic, and it’s far cheaper to produce and of higher quality,” said the report.

In the capital of Beijing 2,700km away, some residents under lockdown staged small-scale protests or confronted their local officials over movement restrictions placed on them, with some successfully pressuring them into lifting them ahead of a schedule. Urumqi officials abruptly held a news conference in the early hours today to deny Covid measures had hampered escape and rescue, but internet users continued to question the official narrative. “The Urumqi fire got everyone in the country upset,” said Sean Li, a resident in Beijing. A separate video shared with Reuters showed Beijing residents in an unidentifiable part of the city marching around an open-air carpark today, shouting “End the lockdown”.

Around 200 dead from major earthquake in Turkey, Syria

DIYARBAKIR: A major earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, killing about 200 people as buildings collapsed across the snowy region, and triggering a search for survivors trapped in rubble. “I have never felt anything like it in the 40 years I’ve lived,” said Erdem, a resident of the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the quake’s epicentre, who declined to give his surname. The US was “profoundly concerned” about the quake in Turkey and Syria and was monitoring events closely, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Twitter. The German Research Centre for Geosciences said the quake struck at a depth of 10 km , while the EMSC monitoring service said it was assessing the risk of a tsunami. More than 17,000 people were killed in 1999 when a 7.6-magnitude quake struck Izmit, a city southeast of Istanbul.
