American music megastar Beyoncé found herself in hot water with fans after she performed at a concert in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country known for severe restrictions on LGBTQ rights. Beyoncé headlined the private $24 million concert in Dubai at the luxury hotel Atlantis The Royal, marking her first live performance in five years. Gay bar owner Lawrence Batron said it was "truly disappointing" to hear of the performance and wondered if Beyoncé had considered the LGBTQ legislation in the UAE. The latest Beyoncé album, Renaissance, was widely celebrated by fans and critics for honoring Black queer culture. Additionally, Beyoncé has been an outspoken advocate for marriage equality, promoting the "Y'all Means All" campaigned targeting North Carolina's "Bathroom Bill."

Washington school board member resigns after being charged in Jan. 6 Capitol protest

A school board member from a small city in Washington state has resigned after he and his stepson were charged in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Slaughter was elected to the Orting School Board last fall. In campaign materials, he described himself as a mortgage loan officer and said he and his wife run a teen center. In a note to families and school staff Wednesday, School Board President Carrie Thibodeaux announced Slaughter had resigned, and that his resignation would be discussed at Thursday night's board meeting. The Justice Department on Thursday also announced charges against two other Washington residents for their roles in the insurrection.
