He told O’Mara: “I have concluded that, although Jared O’Mara was without doubt suffering from autism at the time of the offences, that does not reduce culpability. “You, Jared O’Mara, are a highly intelligent man. “These circumstances were very difficult circumstances for him to cope with, with his particular disabilities,” Mr Kelly added. Arnold, who became O’Mara’s chief of staff in June 2019, was found guilty of three fraud charges and cleared of three.

Liz Truss aides ‘pretended relatives had died’ to get her out of going on TV

Liz Truss’s aides would concoct stories about family members dying in order to get the top Tory out of television appearances, it has been claimed. Kirsty Buchanan, who worked for the new prime minister when she was justice secretary, said Ms Truss did not like doing media. The claim comes as the prime minister on Wednesday pulled out of a scheduled official visit where she was expected to have to speak to broadcasters. The prime minister earlier this month did a series of local radio interviews in which she was repeatedly put on the spot by presenters. Despite Ms Truss’s former aide’s claim the prime minister has appeared regularly on BBC Question Time – a total of nine times between 2012 and 2019.

Rishi Sunak says he has no regrets over appointing Suella Braverman as home secretary

The prime minister said his cabinet minister had “taken accountability” by resigning before he reappointed her to the role less than a week later. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Labour leader Keir Starmer accused Mr Sunak of doing a “grubby deal” in exchange for backing him against rival Penny Mordaunt. “To be sacked last week for a breach of security and now be put back in place as home secretary is an act of weakness from the prime minister. Putin’s next escalation is coming. How should the West respond?

Escalation is a cornerstone of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategy in his war against Ukraine, especially as Ukrainian counter-offensives have steadily rolled back Russian gains. After the initial attack on Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities, Russian escalation has occurred in several phases in response to its losses on the battlefield. In each case, Russian escalation was aimed at gaining battlefield advantage and breaking Ukraine’s will. If Ukraine can recapture more territory quickly, without further Russian escalation, then negotiations may not be needed. Should negotiations be required to end the Ukraine war, a similar formula may be needed.

Manston asylum seekers with suspected diphtheria ‘moved around UK’

Jim McManus, president of the Association of Directors of Public Health, said it had “put asylum seekers and potentially hotel workers at avoidable and preventable risk”. Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman Daisy Cooper said Ms Braverman “must take responsibility and resign immediately” over the “scandal” surrounding Manston. The Conservative government should be ashamed of their callous complacency over the health and well-being of asylum seekers coming out of Manston,” she said. Government officials fear thousands of asylum seekers held at Manston could be in line for at least £5,000, according to the Sunday Times, while some held for long periods could receive bigger payouts. More than 4,000 asylum seekers had been held at the processing facility earlier this month despite its maximum capacity being only 1,600.

Michelle Mone takes leave of absence from House of Lords

It comes as Labour tries to try to force the publication of texts and emails relating to £200m of Covid PPE contracts secured by a company linked to Conservative peer. A spokesperson for Baroness Mone said: “With immediate effect, Baroness Mone will be taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords in order to clear her name of the allegations that have been unjustly levelled against her.”The leave of absence means Lady Mone will not attend sittings of the House, vote on any proceedings and will not be able to claim any allowance. Baroness Mone has come under pressure since it was reported that she is a beneficiary of an offshore trust believed to have received £29m from PPE Medpro’s profits. A Lords standards inquiry over allegations that she failed to properly declare an interest in the company has been put on hold while a police investigation takes place. The Labour deputy leader said the Procurement Bill was “full of loopholes that would give Tory ministers free rein to do it all over again”.

A source close to the former chancellor told PA that Mr Zahawi would stay in his role, while a senior Tory said he was “unlikely” to survive the row over a tax penalty from HMRC, estimated at around £5m. Anneliese Dodds, Labour chair, said her Tory counterpart could help clear up the controversy by publishing his tax returns going back to 2018, the year a stake in YouGov was sold by a Gibraltar-registered trust linked to Mr Zahawi.
