All who signed up to the code, including online platforms, ad-tech companies and civil society, agreed to commit to measures aimed at reducing disinformation. In its baseline report, Twitter said it's "making real advancements across the board" at fighting disinformation. EU leaders have grown alarmed about fake information thriving on online platforms, especially about the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian propaganda amid the war in Ukraine.

China is the last major country committed to a zero-tolerance Covid strategy, responding to dozens of outbreaks with lockdowns and sending entire neighbourhoods out to makeshift quarantine facilities. Posts circulated on Chinese social media this week saying a 14-year-old girl had died in the central city of Ruzhou after falling ill in a quarantine facility and being denied prompt medical care. By Friday afternoon, censors had removed nearly all traces of the incident from the Chinese internet, disabling Weibo hashtags for "Ruzhou Girl" and "Girl from Ruzhou dies in quarantine", and removing most of the videos mentioning the girl's alleged death. The incident comes a month after 27 people died in a traffic accident while they were being ferried before dawn to a quarantine facility in rural Guizhou province.

The path of the righteous: Using mouse movements to understand fraud decisions in real time

The scientists showed that, on average, fraudsters' mouse movements were longer and simultaneously slower than those of honest users. The team explored whether online fraudsters can be distinguished from honest users on the basis of their mouse movements, so-called "trace data," i.e., real-time data like mouse movements or click-streams. Google's parent company Alphabet announced about 12,000 job cuts globally on Friday citing a changing "economic reality", becoming the latest US tech giant to enact large-scale restructuring. Pichai said American employees have already been notified about the cuts while reductions in other countries will take longer due to local labour laws. Wall Street welcomed the cuts: Alphabet shares rose by 3.5 percent in electronic trading before the stock market opened. Hewlett Packard and cloud computing giant Salesforce also announced major cuts this month as rampant inflation and rising interest rates have slowed growth.
