Jesse Beers, a teacher, coach, and parent at Fredonia, spoke to the Board of Education this week about what he called “inequities” in the school’s athletic department and other extracurricular activities. Beers has been in the district for 23 years and is a reigning Section VI Class B2 champion softball coach. Kazlin Beers was a three-sport standout at Fredonia in soccer, basketball, and softball before graduating in 2020. Rylee Beers was a varsity soccer player at Fredonia, who celebrated her senior night this past fall on the SUNY Fredonia field against Dunkirk. Beers noted that many coaches will not schedule games against Fredonia as the host because of the district’s facilities.
The Fredonia Hillbillies faced adversity during the first half of Friday’s regular-season finale against the rival Dunkirk Marauders. We deserved this.”Fredonia led 6-0 after a 4-yard touchdown run by Sam Atzrott with 2:59 left in the first quarter. But 50 seconds later, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Fry to Jameson Quinn and a 2-point conversion pass from Fry to Brandon Wronski put Fredonia ahead 14-7. With 59 seconds left in the first half, Dunkirk evened the score at 14-all with a 5-yard touchdown run by Mike Hanlon and another Jacques extra point. “They scored right before the half and then carried it into the second half.”“That’s what we want to pride ourselves on.5 months ago Observer Today
“Thus, in the best case, the hospital will need sizable ongoing fiscal support, probably in perpetuity,” the report notes. Commission members also put forth the facility can be sustained — if, and only if:Ø Kaleida Health assumes full responsibility for it via a full asset merger with Brooks-TLC. Another $1.5 million would come from billing improvements that would return money to Brooks in a quicker manner. Brooks proposes 15 inpatient beds and that is appropriate given the services it proposes.”There is no timeline regarding what steps are next. However, any decision on the Brooks-TLC plan regarding the release of funding, will likely come from the state Health Department.5 months ago Observer Today
More than 30 people are reported to have died in the region, officials said, including seven storm-related deaths announced Tuesday by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown’s office. The toll surpasses that of the historic Blizzard of 1977, blamed for killing as many as 29 people in an area known for harsh winter weather. The winter blast stranded some people in cars for days, shuttered the city’s airport and left some residents shivering without heat. The National Weather Service said the snow total at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport stood at 49.2 inches (1.25 meters) at 10 a.m. Monday. The U.S. Department of Transportation said it will look into Southwest Airlines flight cancellations that left travelers stranded at airports across the country amid the winter storm.3 months ago Observer Today

Current U.S. Rep. George Santos of Long Island is an intriguing figure in all this. Within the last month, a handful of state Republicans — including state Chairman and U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy — have called for Santos to leave office. “I support the Nassau Republicans’ decision today to request the resignation of George Santos,” Langworthy stated in January. Santos is a heaping mess — but high-ranking Republicans and the constituency in Nassau County gave his fibbing ways credibility. Last month, that same troubled man was allowed to take the oath of office in the House of Representatives.1 month ago Observer Today
JAMESTOWN — There was a moment this past week, however fleeting, that Susan Baldwin believed closure was near. Human remains had been found in Jamestown, and police inquired with the family of Kevin Hornburg regarding the placement of a tattoo that could have helped with identification. It was evident rather quickly, though, that the body discovered behind an East Second Street building Monday was not Hornburg — now missing for almost a year. “I am confident that more than one person in our community knows what happened to Kevin and where his remains are. ‘SHE’S AN ANGEL’Baldwin praised the efforts of Merry Williams, who started the WNY Missing & Unidentified Persons page on Facebook.5 months ago Observer Today
