Elections: NJC seeks appointment of 84 judges, others

The recommended persons would after appointments serve at the federal and state high courts in the country. Others were Justice Abdulateef Kamaldeen (Grand Kadi, Kwara), Justice Stanley Adekunle Lawal, (President, Customary Court of Appeal, FCT), Justice Monisola Oluwatoyin Abodunde (President, Customary Court of Appeal (Ekiti) and Justice Uhuo Patrick Uchenna (President, Customary Court of Appeal, Ebonyi State.) Zamfara High Court has four and they are Abdullahi Muhammad Gusau, Umar Adulnasir, Saad Garba Gurbin-Bore and Muntaka Ahmad Ya’akubu. Kaduna Customary Court of Appeal is to have three Judges and they are Dorothy Sim Inwulale, Atung Dorcaas Tabitta and Yusuf Yakubu. The breakdown also showed that the Plateau State Customary Court of Appeal has only one Judge nominee in person of Jettei T. Pekun.

NASS should eliminate waste in 2023 budget

EVEN before its final shape is settled, Nigeria’s 2023 national budget is anchored on a shaky ground. Experts say a government budget is the principal instrument of fiscal policy used to encourage stable growth, sustainable development, and prosperity. It follows a familiar pattern of prioritising recurrent expenditures and debt servicing over capital projects. At N6.31 trillion, debt servicing alone will gulp 30.77 per cent of the budget. But the NASS can still knock prudence into the 2023 Appropriation Bill, prune waste and the recurrent vote, and increase capital spending.

Floods: Rehabilitating survivors, preventing recurrence

Stories of starvation, neglect, and sickness abound at the internally displaced persons camps. Ten years ago, the country suffered a similar fate when about 30 states were overwhelmed; 363 lives lost and 2.1 million persons displaced. State governments must also halt the indiscriminate recovery of land from the coasts, swamps, and riverbanks. State governments should also build drainages and canals and maintain them regularly. LGs too should build earth dams, mobilise their staff and communities to clear drainages and assist displaced persons.

Polio cases drop by 99.9%, says WHO

The World Health Organisation has said that the global efforts has achieved a more than 99.9 per cent decrease in polio cases since 1988. Dr. Moeti said “Since the landmark resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio was adopted in 1988 at the 41st World Health Assembly, global efforts have achieved a more than 99.9 per cent decrease in polio cases. Two of the three strains of wild poliovirus (Type 2 and Type 3) have been certified as eradicated, and in 2020 the African Region was certified as free of indigenous wild polio. “The Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s 2022-2026 Strategy to end polio lays out the pathway to finish this last mile. “This is critical for Africa to stamp out new cases of wild polio, as well as to safeguard our wild polio-free certification status.

LP, campaign spokesperson differ on Obi's manifesto
