St. Johns County hosts first town hall to discuss 1-cent sales tax referendum

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County plans to host the first of three educational town halls on Tuesday to have a conversation and provide the community with facts about the 1-cent sales tax referendum on the November ballot. The meeting will be held in the St. Johns County Auditorium from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.St. Johns County Commissioner Sarah Arnold proposed the idea of hosting the town halls during a meeting last week, saying there is a lot of misunderstanding about the referendum in the community. GTV is also available on Comcast Cable in southern St. Johns County on Channel 3 and northern St. Johns County on Channel 29 or 261. The dates and locations for the two remaining town halls will be announced later. Early voting begins Oct. 26 in St. Johns County, and the general election is on Nov. 8.

History maker: Edward Waters University names 1st female athletic director in program history

Dr. Ivana Rich was named the first African-American woman as Edward Waters University's Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Edward Waters University, Florida’s oldest HBCU, made history Tuesday with the announcement of its first African-American woman to lead the athletics department in the 155-year history of the institution. The previous HBCUs she’s worked for include Norfolk State University, Howard University and Virginia State University. Dr. Ivana Rich and Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr. (Edward Waters University)However, those do not include the full list of universities that Rich has worked for. Rich comes to EWU following a seven-year stint at Norfolk State University, where she served in numerous positions such as the acting athletic director, associate athletic director for external relations and senior woman administrator.

Republicans have won control of the U.S. House. It took more than a week after the Nov. 8 midterm elections for Republicans to reach the minimum 218 seats needed to flip the House from Democratic control for the next Congress. Republicans have been angling to take over Congress from Democrats, who have controlled the Senate since 2021 and the House since 2019. With the House under Republican control, it is possible that much of President Joe Biden's agenda would be effectively dead for the final two years of his term. Last Saturday, the AP determined that Democrats had maintained control of the Senate after calling the Nevada Senate race for incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto over Republican challenger Adam Laxalt.
