DOUG WHEELER OBITUARYDoug Wheeler, University of New Hampshire emeritus professor of history, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on December 22, 2022, after a heart attack. He was the erudite, gentle and wise partner-in-life of Durham’s political and social powerhouse, former State Senator Katie Wheeler. Wheeler taught history at UNH for nearly 40 years, working in a number of different areas – African history, Portuguese history – colonial and modern, world history and the topical field of espionage. Their topics included: the history of Angola (a Portuguese colony), the history of modern Portugal, the history of dictatorial Portugal, and historical dictionaries on Portugal. After retiring from UNH, Doug taught classes at Granite State College and continued giving talks, such as “Spies in Time,” for NH Humanities and elsewhere.

U.S. DOC and Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry celebrate inaugural U.S.-Singapore Partnership for Growth and Innovation annual dialogue

Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago and Singapore Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry Gabriel Lim held the inaugural U.S.-Singapore Partnership for Growth and Innovation (PGI) annual dialogue. The dialogue convened private sector and civil society representatives from both countries to help review PGI activities and outcomes in 2022 and to inform plans for collaboration in 2023. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong signed the Memorandum of Understanding implementing the PGI in October 2021. The PGI is a bilateral economic cooperation platform designed to secure inclusive growth for our economies and regions by strengthening U.S.-Singapore opportunities and collaboration in new and forward-looking areas. Let’s build on the success of these PGI activities while exploring additional areas for commercial collaboration in 2023,” said Under Secretary Lago.

Port of New Orleans unveils design updates to the Louisiana International Terminal based on early community input

The Louisiana International Terminal is vital to ensuring that our region remains a global logistical hub. As design progresses, Port NOLA is announcing massive investments in sustainability. The Louisiana International Terminal will be equipped with shore power, allowing vessels to connect to onshore electricity and to turn off diesel engines while at dock. Port NOLA is working with Entergy Louisiana to develop an onsite substation to provide the electricity needs for the terminal. The Louisiana International Terminal will deliver an economic impact that begins with construction, grows when the terminal opens, and continues to increase over time.

USDOT Secretary Buttigieg calls on rail industry to take immediate, commonsense steps to improve accountability and safety

That includes laying out immediate steps for Class I railroads to take to improve rail safety in communities across America and to improve working conditions for rail employees. "We at USDOT are doing everything in our power to improve rail safety, and we insist that the rail industry do the same – while inviting Congress to work with us to raise the bar." Require the owners of tank cars they operate to expedite the phase-in of safer (DOT 117) tank cars in advance of the Congressionally mandated 2029 deadline. Despite two-person train crews being industry standard, the rail industry has resisted being regulated on this front and pushed for crews of less than two people. Congress established a phase-in schedule under the 2015 FAST Act which gives owners of tank cars until 2029 to fully adopt stronger (DOT 117) tank cars.

The New York Times may not be covering the recent co/efficient poll showing that Republican Lee Zeldin has overtaken incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul in the New York governor's race, but you can bet Kathy Hochul has noticed. Hochul ended with Hochul’s sudden new ad claiming she is committed to public safety.
