DOJ sues Google over its dominance in online advertising market(CNN) — The Justice Department and eight states sued Google on Tuesday, accusing the company of harming competition with its dominance in the online advertising market and calling for it to be broken up. By comparison, the next largest giant in online advertising, Facebook-parent Meta, generated $115 billion in 2021. (Tuesday’s suit targets a subset of Google’s ad revenue represented by display advertising, a roughly $32 billion business for the company.) On Tuesday, Kanter told reporters that Google abused “longstanding monopolies in digital advertising technologies” to give itself an advantage. It concluded, among other things, that Google was uniquely positioned to benefit from its powerful role in the online ad industry.
Supreme Court says Trump-era border restriction will remain in effect while legal challenges play out(CNN) — The Supreme Court said Tuesday that the controversial Trump-era border restriction known as Title 42 will remain in effect while legal challenges play out, a move that ensures that federal officials will be able to continue to swiftly expel migrants at US borders at least for the next several months. The 5-4 order is a victory for Republican-led states that urged the Supreme Court to step in and block a lower court opinion that ordered the termination of the authority. In its order, the court also agreed to take up the states’ appeal this term. Since March 2020, Title 42 has allowed US border agents to immediately turn away migrants who have crossed the southern border in the name of Covid-19 prevention. But the solution to that immigration problem cannot be to extend indefinitely a public-health measure that all now acknowledge has outlived its public-health justification,” Prelogar wrote in a filing with the Supreme Court.1 month ago NBC Palm Springs
What we know about ex-GOP candidate arrested in connection with shootings at homes of New Mexico Democrats(CNN) — An unsuccessful Republican candidate for state office in New Mexico who attributed his defeat to a “rigged” election is accused of masterminding a series of shootings targeting the homes of elected Democrats. The Maxima was registered to Peña, though Peña was not driving it when it was stopped, police said. “You can’t hide from your own history,” Peña told the outlet in September. “It is believed he is the mastermind” behind the shootings, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina told reporters, referring to the suspect. A car driven at one of the shooting scenes was registered to Peña, according to police.17 days ago NBC Palm Springs
Ukraine claims hundreds of Russian troops killed in strike; Moscow says 63 died(CNN) — An apparent Ukrainian strike in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine appears to have killed a large number of Russian troops, according to the Ukrainian military, pro-Russian military bloggers and former officials. The Ukrainian military said later on Monday that the number of Russian servicemen killed in Makiivka is “being clarified” after claiming earlier that around 400 Russian soldiers were killed and a further 300 were wounded. Some pro-Russian military bloggers have also estimated that the number of dead and wounded could run in the hundreds. Sergey Markov, another pro-Russian military blogger, said there was “a great deal of sloppiness” on the part of the Russian command. The news comes after the Ukrainian military claimed that more than 700 Russian soldiers had been killed Saturday, but did not specify where.1 month ago NBC Palm Springs

Colorado Springs-area pastor and Republican candidate Scott Bottoms is looking to retain the decades-long GOP stronghold in Colorado's House District 15 in next month's election. The district is currently represented by Republican state Rep. Dave Williams, who unsuccessfully campaigned in June against Congressman Doug Lamborn for the GOP nomination to the 5th congressional district. "This is a seat that Republicans have traditionally won, but there are a couple of things that are really working in our favor," El Paso County Democratic Party Chairman John Mikos said. Bottoms was among several preferred El Paso County GOP candidates who ran in the June primary election and billed themselves as anti-establishment Republicans. El Paso County Republican Party Chairwoman Vickie Tonkins called Bottoms "a man of virtue" who "carries the values of the district," in contrast to Sexton, whom she called a "radical Democrat who will carry the water for Jared Polis.3 months ago Colorado Springs Gazette
