“This course on Black history. “Now who would say that an important part of Black history is ‘queer theory”?” DeSantis said mockingly, not recognizing that LGBTQ people are an integral and important part of all races and cultures. When you try to use Black history to shoehorn in queer theory, you are clearly trying to use that for political purposes.”Governor DeSantis studied history at Yale and taught history at a private college prep school in Georgia. But trustees did not say when Harrell’s departure would take effect or when Patterson would begin as his interim replacement. For months, some family members of shooting victims called for Harrell’s resignation, arguing that he, and many other school officials, should be held responsible for failing to prepare for a school shooting. The board abruptly ended the public comment period and went behind closed doors to discuss the details about Harrell’s retirement. His pending departure is the latest in a series of school officials who have left, often unwillingly, since the shooting. In August, the school district fired the head of the police department, Pete Arredondo, who was widely criticized for his response to the shooting.3 months ago The New Civil Rights Movement
Crossrail’s Bond Street station finally opens to the public today (24 October). Work begins today to lay the foundations that will pave the way for the electrification of the Levenmouth Rail Link. The £116.6M Levenmouth Rail Link scheme aims to connect the seaside town of Leven with Thornton Junction which dates back to 1854. Further piling along the Levenmouth rail corridor is being programmed so that it works in tandem with other activities on the project, such as work on bridges and track laying. Piling is an essential part of laying the foundations for the newly electrified railway and it is among the noisiest work activities on the railway and can be disruptive. Work on the Levenmouth Rail Link is scheduled to complete in spring 2024 and services will initially be in introduced using diesel trains.3 months ago New Civil Engineer
AdobeA Scottish charity has revealed that its gas bill will increase by more than 500%, from £9,700 to £62,000 in a year. Toryglen Community Base is a multi-purpose community resource centre that provides access to training courses, activities and spaces for local people. The quote stated that its gas bill would increase to £62,273, a 539% increase on what the charity currently pays. ‘Charities will not be able to provide the services that we all depend on’Alison Thewliss, SNP MP for Glasgow Central, highlighted the charity’s gas bill in a parliamentary debate earlier this month. She will doubtlessly support the elements of the Energy Prices Bill that look to decouple those prices and do everything they can to hold prices down.”3 months ago Civil Society
Here’s our review for “Black Adam” as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson finally portrays a comic book character in a film that’s far more fun than it has any business being…By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead WriterIt’s taken Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson a long, long time to finally see his comic book fantasy realized with “Black Adam” landing in theaters. Instead, Johnson wanted to play Black Adam — a demigod with powers equal to Superman, who has no problem killing to get the job done. ACTING, DIRECTING AND SCRIPTListen let’s be honest here — “Black Adam” isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel and the film certainly isn’t attempting to redefine the comic book movie genre. No, this isn’t the most compelling comic book movie ever made and it’s tough to imagine this will go down as one of the more memorable films of 2022. That said, “Black Adam” executes a winning strategy with huge, epic action sequences and a story good enough that it will keep you interested for two hours.3 months ago Nerdcore Movement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Facing significant gaps in the use of Magnitsky sanctions by the U.S., Canada, UK, and EU, leading human rights organizations today issued the first-ever multilateral report calling for the more effective use of these human rights and anti-corruption accountability tools. “Targeted sanctions can play an important role in providing a measure of justice for victims of torture and other human rights violations. “It will go a long way to secure justice for victims and accountability for human rights violators, while protecting the security of our democracies. Jurisdictions should sanction perpetrators of corruption or human rights abuses without fear or favor, in complement to other foreign policy efforts. Recognize a wider range of human rights abuses and marginalized victims: Jurisdictions have largely overlooked certain serious human rights abuses such as human trafficking, and should impose sanctions for a broader array of abuses.2 months ago Human Rights First
