6:24 p.m. Maher misses another extra pointThe Cowboys scored the game’s first touchdown to take a 6–3 lead over the 49ers in the second quarter. Then, kicker Brett Maher’s point after attempt went wide left. Minutes later, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones met with kicker Brett Maher and holder Bryan Anger before the field-goal warmup again resumed. Jones then chatted with 49ers kicker Robbie Gould. To get to the NFC title game, Dallas will have to get past a star-studded 49ers team.

Astros complete ALCS sweep of New York Yankees, advance to 4th World Series in 6 years

NEW YORK — Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman delivered big hits and the Houston Astros advanced to the World Series again, finishing a four-game sweep of New York in the AL Championship Series with a 6-5 victory Sunday night aided by another defensive gaffe from the Yankees. Houston will open the World Series at home Friday night against Bryce Harper and the wild-card Philadelphia Phillies, who beat San Diego earlier in the day to close out the best-of-seven NLCS in five games. After losing to Atlanta in last year’s World Series, Houston earned the fifth pennant in franchise history and another chance at its second World Series championship. Able to negotiate with all teams starting on the sixth day after the World Series, Judge is due a big reward for betting on himself. In his fifth season as manager, New York sprinted to a 61-23 record in early July, sparking comparison with the 1998 championship Yankees.

But an increasing number of political candidates just skipped forums that make them answerable to the public. In Tarrant County, Tim O’Hare and Phil Sorrells, Republican candidates for top county positions, declined to participate in the Fort Worth Report’s debate. During primary season this spring, Politico detailed a nationwide slate of Republican candidates who skipped traditional election forums like debates. With state governments increasingly sorting themselves by party, and gerrymandering increasingly homogenizing voter pools, Texas Republicans are able to treat general elections as an exercise in running out the clock. The sad irony is that the Republican Party of Texas is choosing this tack just at a time when conservative principles are enjoying popularity.

When Tony Beasley called Thursday morning, a week after being told he’d finished runner-up in a two-man race to manage the Rangers, there was no trace of disappointment in his voice. Coming back to see the process through with the Rangers is one blessing and it’s nice. If there is one other thing for which Beasley has become known for in his time with the Rangers, it’s honesty. “I can’t blame [Young],” Beasley added. “He let me know I’m a big part of this organization and that he wanted me to stay on,” Beasley said.

Oklahoma sues Federal Bureau of Prisons in North Texas for inmate it wants to execute

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma is suing the Federal Bureau of Prisons for custody of a state death row inmate whom the bureau is refusing to hand over, with the state saying the man’s scheduled execution cannot be carried out in December if he’s not returned soon. The Bureau of Prisons' refusal to turn over Hanson raises questions about whether the agency is using its power to deliver on the president's political pledge. Hanson is serving a life sentence for numerous federal convictions, including being a career criminal, that predate his state death sentence. The prisons bureau declined comment, citing the official’s previous responses. It was later learned the same wrong drug had been used to execute an inmate in January 2015.

Luka Doncic logs triple-double, ‘just a nightmare’ for Rockets with Mavericks’ support

Doncic still starred with his NBA-leading eighth triple-double: 35 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in 34 minutes. Midway through the third quarter, Doncic swished a 3-pointer over Garuba and signaled the 6-8, 220-pound big man was too small to guard him. The two later collided and tumbled to the court after a Doncic shot attempt, leaving the Mavericks’ superstar with a bright red scrape down his left cheek and with his eighth technical foul of the season. Then, during the Rockets’ postgame flight from Boston, assistant John Lucas II alerted him that “Luka has 40-whatever and they’re down” against the Knicks. The Mavericks and their do-it-all superstar will return to Houston Monday for their third Rockets matchup in an 11-day span.
