One in twenty people in Cork suffering from Long Covid

The research carried out on behalf of Independent TD Denis Naughten found there are 230,559 Irish people who say they are suffering from symptoms associated with Long Covid. Below is a breakdown of the number of Long Covid sufferers in each county. He said it offers a stark perspective on the community prevalence of Long Covid, which does not currently have a defined treatment pathway. “We need to see this surge of long Covid patients managed with a coordinated Government response.”While most will make a full recovery from Covid-19 within 12 weeks, according to the HSE those afflicted by Long Covid can suffer from a range of symptoms that affect their daily livesCommon Long Covid symptoms include:extreme tiredness (fatigue)shortness of breathchest pain or tightnessproblems with memory and thinking (‘brain fog’)problems sleeping (insomnia)heart palpitationsdizzinessYou can find a full list of symptoms and advice from the HSE here. Mr Naughten, who has for years campaigned for better health services, recently called for Long Covid to be recognised as an occupational hazard for frontline workers.

These will carry an enhanced penalty and the criminal record will clearly state that the offence was a hate crime. However, Minister McEntee said that hate speech is not about free speech – hate speech is designed to shut people down, to shut them up, to make them afraid to say who they are and to exclude and isolate them. This Bill provides separately for hate crime and for hate speech, but on the basis of the same protected characteristics. The need for new legislation to address hate speech and hate crime has been recognised for many years. However, the Minister McEntee concluded that motivation alone in proving hate crime offences can be difficult to establish and therefore might not result in a conviction.
